3D Realms was founded in 1987 as Apogee Software. The independent studio pioneered shareware distribution under the so-called “Apogee Model” in which the first episode of a game would be released for free, with subsequent episodes costing money. The studio changed its trade name to 3D Realms in 1996 in order to direct its focus on the relatively new 3D games that were dominating the market.
