It’s unfortunate that an all-electric SUV with falcon wing doors is more associated with production delays than its unique features, but that’s the way the cookie crumbles.
Last we heard, the family-friendly Tesla Model X was slated for a late 2015 release, but the American automaker has just confirmed new information on the forthcoming model that’s much more interesting than a leaky door seal.
Tesla has confirmed a dual motor layout and all-wheel drive for the crossover, and the car will use the 376–horsepower powertrain from the upper mid-range Model S 85D model.
“In October, we announced dual motor all-wheel drive and Autopilot. These were important leaps forward for Model S, but we’re pleased to confirm that they will also be central to Model X,” Tesla’s email reads. “The dual motor propulsion system of Model S 85D will be the same system that powers Model X, delivering uncompromised range and control of traction.”
The S 85D sits just below the new P 85D range-topper, which is rated at 691 hp and pushes the sedan to 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds.
The American brand also announced that the SUV will be the world’s first electric vehicle with real towing abilities, however the manufacturer did not go into any specifics as far load ratings.
“The optional tow hitch will support accessories and racks to transport skis and bikes with the minimum effect on aerodynamics,” the message continues. “We’re also working with the best rack and accessory companies in the world to have elegant carrying solutions ready for Model X customers next year.”
As of September, some 20,000 Model X deposits have been received by Tesla.
