Netflix debuted the very first trailer for the upcoming third season of House of Cards shortly after Kevin Spacey won a Golden Globe Award for his performance in the series’ second season, and the stakes has never been higher for the award-winning political drama’s cast of characters.
The third season of the series premieres in its entirety on Netflix next month, on February 27 at 12:01 AM. New characters announced for Season Three include Jenna Stern as an ambassador for the United Nations and several members of the band Pussy Riot in unspecified roles.
“You want to know what takes real courage?” asks Frank Underwood (Spacey) as the preview opens. “Holding it all together when the stakes are this high.”
Spacey’s win at the Golden Globe Awards over the weekend is just the latest in a long list of awards that the series has received over its first two seasons. Along with Spacey’s co-star Robin Wright being nominated this year and the show itself receiving a nomination for “Best Television Series – Drama,” the series earned four nominations and a win (for Wright) at last year’s Golden Globe Awards. House of Cards has also won four Primetime Emmy Awards and been nominated for an impressive 16 additional Emmy Awards over two seasons.
Created by Oscar-nominated writer Beau Willimon (The Idea of March), House of Cards is the first Netflix project to win an Emmy and is an adaptation of the BBC miniseries of the same name (which is based on a novel by Michael Dobbs).
