Google and SolarCity want to install solar panels on your home

Solar power installer and financier SolarCity has recently announced its plans for the creation of a new $750M fund for residential solar projects, $300 million of which will come from Google. The search giant has invested well over $1 billion in clean energy projects over the years, but this will be its largest green power investment to date.

This new fund will go toward financing the installation of residential solar panels in 14 different states, making it possible for even more homeowners to get solar energy systems on their roofs without paying any upfront cost. Instead of homeowners buying panels themselves, SolarCity installs them for free and charges the user a monthly fee for the electricity the panels produce. This type of deal is known as a power purchase agreement, and in some cases can actually be cheaper than buying power from your local utility provider.

This isn’t the first time Google and SolarCity have joined forces on such a project, either. Google committed $280 million to a similar solar installation fund created by SolarCity back in the summer of 2011, which was one of the first times that a large corporate entity (other than a bank) agreed to invest in solar energy projects.

So while this new fund isn’t necessarily groundbreaking, it does illustrate just how much momentum is behind the solar panel industry right now. Last year, solar energy represented over a third of all new electricity in the U.S., and analysts predict it could grow to over 40 percent in 2015. The solar industry also employs more than twice as many workers as the coal industry nowadays — a strong sign that renewable energy is slowly but surely rising to power.

This smart display alternative can now use AI to plan all your meals
The Skylight Cal Max installed on a wall.

Skylight is a smart home company that produces a variety of smart display alternatives, such as the Skylight Cal Max. These serve as a central hub for all your daily planning -- they’re primarily used as a digital calendar, but you can also use them to track chores, make lists, or meal prep. That last aspect just became much more exciting, as Skylight is officially introducing Sidekick, an AI-powered assistant that can plan all your meals in just a few minutes.

Sidekick is a new AI feature for Skylight devices. It’s capable of generating personalized recipes based on your budget, family size, and dietary restrictions, and it’ll even create a shopping list and load up step-by-step cooking instructions. Skylight hopes the new feature will save families 10 hours every month, as they’ll no longer need to worry about the logistics surrounding meal prep.

Why you should buy the Govee Icicle Lights
I love Govee products. Since buying the Govee Lyra Smart Floor Lamp, I’ve been consistently impressed by how well its products work while being very keenly priced. It’s a different kind of technology than the best cheap smart light bulbs but it’s perfect for stringing together some lights around your home or room. The only downside is the company's app isn't as stylish as the Hue one but you get all the same benefits for a much better price.
