Unbreakable director M. Night Shyamalan hasn’t had a bona fide box-office hit in nearly a decade, but there was a time when his name was synonymous with tense, psychological thrillers that kept audiences guessing (and on the edges of their seats) right up until the credits rolled. After a string of big-budget bombs, Shyamalan appears to be returning to his roots with his latest film, The Visit, about a pair of kids who discover all is not as it seems with their elderly grandparents.

The first trailer for The Visit premiered this week, and it serves up some pretty good scares — as well as some hope that Shyamalan may have rediscovered the niche he carved out so well for himself in the early 2000s.

The Visit casts Ed Oxenbould (Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day) and Olivia DeJonge (The Sisterhood of Night) as a pair of siblings whose week-long visit with their grandparents — played by Deanna Dunagan (Have a Little Faith) and Peter McRobbie (Lincoln) — takes a sinister turn when they begin discovering the creepy and disturbing habits of grandma and grandpa late at night (and occasionally during the day, too). The pair’s absent and oblivious mother is played by Kathryn Hahn (The Secret Life of Walter Mitty).

The first poster for the film also debuted this week, and it offers up a list of “Grandma’s Rules” listed below:

Nothing cryptic about that last one, eh?

The Visit is Shyamalan’s first thriller since 2008’s The Happening, a box-office flop that was followed by two more big-budget disappointments in The Last Airbender and After Earth. However, prior to his string of underperforming projects, Shyamalan was a veritable hit machine in Hollywood, earning both critical praise and commercial success with films like the Oscar-nominated thriller The Sixth SenseSigns, and The Village.

The Visit hits theaters September 11.

Servant season 4 finale ending explained
Two men look at a piece of paper in Servant.

Servant’s final season was emotional, horrifying, and heartbreaking all in one. Apple TV+ wrapped up the twisted and disturbing Alfred Hitchcock-like M. Night Shyamalan story, one of the first Apple TV+ original series, in a way that seemed rushed yet also satisfying.

The story begins when a married couple enlists the help of a young woman named Leanne (Nell Tiger Free) to care for their infant son. As revealed in previous seasons, however, Jericho sadly perished after being accidentally left in the car on a hot night. His mother Dorothy (Lauren Ambrose), stricken and catatonic with grief, was given a lifelike doll to help her cope, a radical new form of therapy. But she eventually repressed the memory of her son’s death altogether, believing the doll to be a real baby. Then, something weird happened. When Leanne entered their lives, the doll became real.

5 upcoming horror movies you have to see in 2023
Ghostface shows his knife in Scream VI.

There's no doubt that 2022 was a great year for horror films, with Scream, Barbarian, Smile, and Speak No Evil scoring not only with audiences, but critics as well. Even B movies like Orphan: First Kill and Terrifier 2 were better than they had any right to be, providing the slasher genre with a deep bench of highbrow and lowbrow hits for fans to choose from.

The good news is that 2023 promises to be no different. With M3GAN ruling the box office with her murderous TikTok dance moves, the horror genre is poised to reap even more success this year with a slate full of worthy originals, reboots, sequels, and adaptations. These films have the most potential to be just as good as their 2022 brothers and sisters.

Bn Aldridge and Jonathan Groff are tied to chairs while Dave BAutista talks to them.

When M. Night Shyamalan releases a movie, you better believe it will start a heated conversation within the film community. Shyamalan is one of the few living filmmakers who can attract an audience based on his name alone. His films have become synonymous with supernatural elements and twist endings. His latest venture is Knock at the Cabin, a psychological thriller with apocalyptic stakes based on the 2018 novel by Paul G. Tremblay. In it two parents and their young daughter head to a remote cabin for a vacation. Their cabin is overrun by four strangers, who hold the family hostage, demanding they sacrifice one of their own to avoid the apocalypse. The film stars Dave Bautista as the lead intruder and Jonathan Groff and Ben Aldridge as the two parents. If you're looking for more thrillers like Knock at the Cabin, check out the list below.
