Toren, the latest release from The Banner Saga publisher Versus Evil, will be releasing May 12 on PlayStation 4 and PC, and early adopters will be receiving a special discount.

Toren is the first adventure game from Brazilian indie developer Swordtales,” Versus Evil community director Lance James says in the official PlayStation announcement. “You are Moonchild, destined to climb the tower (known as Toren) on a hauntingly solitary adventure to find your purpose.”

The game’s launch trailer bears a resemblance to the PlayStation classic Ico, which James acknowledges as a major source of inspiration due to its emptiness and simple narrative. Meanwhile, its simple aesthetic design is reminiscent of 2012’s Papo & Yo, using a matte color palette and foliage-filled environments.

“Cursed with eternal sunlight,” the Moonchild must climb the Toren and resume the passage of time. Although it’s presented by Versus Evil as an adventure game, the glimpses of combat seen in the trailer, as well as a sword embedded in stone, suggest that Zelda may have also been an influence. Standing in the Moonchild’s way is The Dragon, a monster capable of petrifying “any living behind around it.”

“Death is not the end,” the narrator declares. “It’s up to you to find our new beginning.”

While Toren will typically sell for $10, there are two separate offers to encourage early purchases. On Steam, pre-ordering the game will drop the price to $9. Similarly, PlayStation Plus subscribers receive the same discount if they buy Toren within its first week of launch.

Versus Evil, which prides itself as an independent publisher in the same vein as Devolver Digital, is currently partnered with several studios aside from Swordtales and The Banner Saga developer Stoic. Tangrin Entertainment — a two-person team from the Netherlands — is currently working on the Viking RPG Kyn for PC, Mac, and Linux, and Seattle-based 4gency is developing the strategy game Habitat for PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and mobile platforms.

All Resident Evil games in order, by release date and chronologically
Leon parries a chainsaw villager in Resident Evil 4.

There are almost no survival horror games that last for more than few entries, let alone ones that have persisted for decades like Resident Evil. This series had humble beginnings as a small horror experience set in a single mansion to explore, solve puzzles, and fight against the clunky tank controls and fixed camera angles. Since then, the series has evolved and grown into one of the most recognizable Capcom IPs there is, with new entries and amazing remakes coming out almost every year.

Currently, the highest-numbered Resident Evil game is 8, aka Village, but you would be wildly off if you thought there were only eight entries to consider when looking to complete the series. Right from the start, Resident Evil has loved expanding its world with a massive cast of characters and new protagonists from game to game. Resident Evil 7 was a soft reboot for the series, but there is still a cannon order to the events surrounding Umbrella, the various zombie viruses, and all our favorite heroes like Chris and Leon.

If you love Animal Crossing, try this great new PC game next
The player rides their bike through some townies in Go-Go Town.

Like millions of other people, I was briefly addicted to Animal Crossing: New Horizons in early 2020. Needing to play it for work and having little else to do, I dumped a lot of time into that Nintendo Switch game over the course of a couple of months in spring 2020. After losing a lot of bells in the game's stalk market and getting frustrated by the slow cadence of updates, I bounced off the game hard and have had trouble returning to my island ever since. Thankfully, there are plenty of games aiming to take a shot at Animal Crossing: New Horizons' cutesy town-building, life simulation crown. While some people prefer games like Hello Kitty: Island Adventure, I've recently been hooked on Go-Go Town.

Released into Steam early access by Prideful Sloth and Cult Games on June 18, Go-Go Town is a charmingly approachable game about building a run-down city back up as its mayor. Although it's not the most innovative game in the genre, Go-Go Town's appealing presentation, intuitive gameplay systems, and already-present gameplay loops made it the first game in a while to remind me of why I loved Animal Crossing: New Horizons so much in 2020. With Prideful Sloth already being very transparent about its early access plans, Go-Go Town is shaping up to be something really special.

You can now play the original Resident Evil on PC in all its retro glory

Capcom has made it easy to experience older Resident Evil titles with the help of its many recent remakes, but you were mostly out of luck on modern platforms if you wanted to actually play the original versions of those titles. Well, the GOG PC gaming storefront announced Wednesday that you'll soon be able to play the first three Resident Evil games in their (mostly) original forms.

Right now, however, only Resident Evil is available. For $10, you can play the iconic 1997 survival horror game with just a few quality-of-life improvements to make it run well on your Windows 10 or 11 PC. The GOG version makes some very small changes to the gameplay, including improving the timing of cutscenes and making it easier to exit the game, and it now has support for most modern controllers.
