Helldivers, the wickedly hard twin-stick shooter from Arrowhead Game Studios, is receiving a free content update, and things are going to get a little bit warm.

The update, dubbed “Turning up the Heat,” brings with it both new mission objectives and new enemy types, addressing criticisms that these particular areas were uninspired. What doesn’t look to be changing is the campy tone and hair-pulling difficulty: There will just be several more ways for the game to kill you.

In the first of the “Turning up the Heat” development videos, designer Patrik Lasota shows off several new objectives, including an artillery cannon that must be loaded with nearby shells through Helldivers‘ Dance Dance Revolution-style mechanic, and a bomb-disarming mission that tasks the Helldivers with using metal detectors to locate nearby explosives.

HELLDIVERS: Turning up the Heat feature #1 – Objectives

New enemies include the “Illuminate Obelisk,” a round, armored enemy capable of trapping characters in place with a projected energy shield that will instantly kill anyone unfortunate enough to cross its path. The “Bug Impaler,” meanwhile, uses its “three vicious tentacles” to attack Helldivers and stop them from pushing ahead. Much like the original enemies, the update brings a mix of both organic foes and robots, and the new armored hounds appear to be straight out of the latest Wolfenstein game.

HELLDIVERS: Turning up the Heat feature #2 – Enemies

With a name like “Turning up the Heat,” it only makes sense that this all takes place in new lava-filled environments. The areas are filled with floating bits of dust and erupting lava; if it’s anything like the original release, this will look quite a bit better on the PlayStation 4 version of the game than on the PlayStation 3 or Vita, where muddy textures and a compromised control scheme slightly detract from the experience. If you’re still looking to purchase Helldivers, it’s available with cross-buy and cross-save support for $20 on the PlayStation store.

Arrowhead Game Studios has provided an update on its 60-day improvement plan for Helldivers 2 as it seeks to gain back goodwill from the community.

In a statement posted to Steam Thursday, the team highlighted the changes coming to the next update on September 17, which is just a small part of the plan to retool the game. However, the improvements are seeking to tackle a lot of the problems players have brought forth to the developers over the past few months.

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven puts a promising twist on turn-based RPGs
Man with long red hair putting crown on head of red haired teenage boy.

Despite the name, Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is less about romance about more about legacy. This Square Enix remake of a non-linear 1993 RPG features an Inheritance system where protagonists eventually take the skills of another, growing stronger with each generation. It takes multiple lifetimes to take down the big bad, which might play out differently depending on who inherits the throne.

While I didn't get much time to get to know the characters themselves during a 30-minute demo at PAX West, the satisfying turn-based combat and signature Glimmer mechanic signal a strong showing for turn-based RPG fans.
Watch the throne
In Romancing SaGa 2, seven heroes who saved the world were sealed away into another dimension, fated to return to save humanity again. They eventually make a return, but they are corrupted by the alternate dimension and decide to take revenge on the world that abandoned them.

Helldivers 2 devs have a 60-day plan to win back player goodwill

Helldivers 2 developers announced a 60-day plan to address long-standing issues with the player base, which has been in an uproar over recent changes in its latest big patch.

In a statement posted to the subreddit on Tuesday, Arrowhead Game Studios game director Mikael Eriksson admits that the team "didn't hit our target" with the Escalation of Freedom update. The community has responded negatively to many of its changes, including a nerf to fire weapons like the Breaker Incendiary and the FLAM-40 flamethrower. These used to be great against charger terminids, but were patched to no longer penetrate their hides (and before a fire-based premium warbond no less).
