Microsoft still on track for July release of Windows 10

Back in April, AMD’s CEO, Lisa Su, accidentally slipped a projected July release date of Windows 10 into an investor call. That lead to anticipation that Microsoft would make a date official at its BUILD 2015 conference, but that came and went with no further news, leaving many to wonder if the projected date has been missed, or was wrong in the first place.

Now The Verge claims Microsoft is still targeting a July 2015 release and is likely to hit that goal. The company was apparently timid about announcing a date at BUILD because, at the time, there was uncertainty over whether Windows 10 would be ready in time. Confidence has begun to grow as of late, however, and the July release now looks very likely.

This is all still speculation and rumors, of course, and none of the information comes from an official, on-the-record source. A last-minute delay is still possible, even likely. Historically, Microsoft hasn’t launched a new version of Windows until several months after it hits a code-complete “release to manufacturing” status, but sources suggest things will be different this time around because of a company-wide effort to update and release software more aggressively.

Launching in July may mean some sacrifices, however. For example, Microsoft plans to pack extension support into the Edge browser, but that feature won’t be available at the release of Windows 10. Users should expect to see numerous, frequent updates to Windows 10 after release as a result of Microsoft’s new “Windows as a service” approach to its core product.

We also know that Microsoft will continue its Insider program after the release of Windows 10. That means power users will continue to be able to trade off stability for earlier access to cutting-edge features.

If the rumors are correct, then we should expect to see some movement from Microsoft soon. It’s barely two months until the end of July, which doesn’t leave the company much time to start its marketing campaign and put word out to consumers.

Microsoft is, once again, trying to force users into using Edge

Microsoft has deployed no shortage of tactics to get Windows users onto its Edge browser, and although some of the more nefarious methods of trying to force users to pick up the browser have failed, the company is still experimenting with new methods. The latest route launches Edge automatically on your PC on startup and prompts users to continually import data from Chrome, including your history, bookmarks, and tabs.

Richard Lawler from The Verge spotted the prompt, which showed up earlier this year without explanation before disappearing. It's back now, and in an official capacity from Microsoft. "This is a notification giving people the choice to import data from other browsers," said Microsoft's Caitlin Roulston in a statement to The Verge.

Microsoft tests a universal share button on Windows 11

Microsoft is looking to expand the use of its Share button in a future update to Windows 11, to make transporting content between contacts more efficient. The company is testing a universal Share button in a new Preview Build of Windows 11, now available to Windows Insiders in the Dev and Beta channels.

While the Share button availability can vary depending on the app on Windows, this new function will enable a Share button throughout the Windows 11 operating system, including in the taskbar and Start menu. Users will be able to send files, links, or text conveniently from their desktops.
