Initially, OS X versions were named after big cats, but with 10.9, also known as Mavericks, that changed to locations within the borders of Apple’s home state, California. Mavericks was named after the famed surfing location, and OS X 10.10 is named after the Yosemite national park.
Now OS X 10.11 is right around the corner, and there’s plenty of speculation about what it will be called. The code name is “Gala,” but that does not bare any reflection on the release name, which has not been announced. There haven’t even been any credible leaks.
