Apple certainly knows how to brand itself better than Microsoft, and the name of the Mac operating system is one way that’s evident. Every version of OS X receives not just a version number but also a unique call-sign.

Initially, OS X versions were named after big cats, but with 10.9, also known as Mavericks, that changed to locations within the borders of Apple’s home state, California. Mavericks was named after the famed surfing location, and OS X 10.10 is named after the Yosemite national park.

Now OS X 10.11 is right around the corner, and there’s plenty of speculation about what it will be called. The code name is “Gala,” but that does not bare any reflection on the release name, which has not been announced. There haven’t even been any credible leaks.

So, what do you think it will be named? Will it take after a major city in California, another landmark, or something more obscure? Send us your guess using the form below (and comment too). If it proves correct, you’ll be entered for a chance to win an Apple TV.

Update: Apple has officially announced the name of OS X 10.11 and it’s “El Capitan.” We will notify the winner shortly (if there is one!).

A hand holds an Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max showing apps on the screen.

The iPhone 11 Pro Max offered the latest and greatest features in a sleek design when it was launched in 2019.
