Finally you can reserve an Apple Watch and pick it up in-store

It’s a slight understatement to say that people were excited about the Apple Watch. Apple is said to have received 1.7 million pre-orders, and the company warned that in-store availability would be limited to trying the watch on — if you wanted to buy one, it had to be online.

Last month we reported that Apple was preparing an in-store pickup program, with the Apple Watch making its way to stores sometime in June. Today that program, dubbed Reserve & Pickup, is rolling out in the U.S., U.K., Australia and more, 9to5 Mac reports.

The new program allows customers to select a case and band combination online, as has always been the case, but now they will be able to view the combination in-store before completing the purchase. This ensures users are happy with their selection, and it also gets closer to the instant gratification that online-only orders lack.

This doesn’t mean that users are given carte blanche with the new system: only one reservation can be made at a time, and there is a limited window of time before the reserved combination is returned to stock.

The program is slated to launch in the U.S. sometime today. The Reserve & Pickup page is available on the U.S. Apple Store website, but at the time of this writing reservations can’t yet be made. Reservations are expected to become available sometime after 8:00 a.m. ET.

This is a step up in terms of availability, but it still doesn’t quite match the availability of the iPhone, where customers can assume that any Apple Store will carry every variant. Availability will still be sparse, and a message on Apple’s Reserve & Pickup page warns “due to high demand, it’s possible this watch will become unavailable before you confirm your reservation.”

There will likely be some initial kinks in the process, but even so, it’s never been easier to buy an Apple Watch, and that’s got to be worth something.

These smart glasses have a digital crown just like an Apple Watch
A person wearing the Looktech AI Glasses.

Smart glasses with cameras built-in have taken off in 2024, and now a new pair has arrived on Kickstarter called the Looktech AI Glasses. The glasses provide hands-free access to an AI assistant, but what makes the otherwise familiar design stand out is the addition of a “crown” to control some of the features.

We’re used to seeing this type of control on the Apple Watch and many of the best smartwatches, but this is the first time we’ve seen it on a pair of smart glasses. The crown is set on the underside of the right-hand side arm of the Looktech AI Glasses and can apparently be twisted and pressed to control music playback through the built-in speakers.

The next Apple Watch Ultra may get a lifesaving upgrade
The front of the Apple Watch Ultra.

One of the most notable features Apple has released in the past few years is support for satellite connectivity on iPhones to help with emergency assistance and communication. It helped people facing the wrath of Hurricane Helene a few weeks ago, and it now looks like Apple is extending that feature to smartwatches.

According to Bloomberg, next year’s Apple Watch Ultra model will be able to latch on to satellite networks. “The technology will let smartwatch users send off-the-grid text messages via Globalstar Inc.’s fleet of satellites when they don’t have a cellular or Wi-Fi connection,” says the report.

You can now use an external webcam with Microsoft Teams on your iPad. Here’s how
Home screen layout of the 2024 iPad mini.

For a lot of people, the iPad is the device they choose to work with, which may include taking video calls. Though the front-facing camera on iPads has gotten better over time, many still prefer external webcams because they’re often much better than the built-in webcam on your tablet or even laptop. And now, if you use Microsoft Teams on iPad, you’re finally able to use external cameras, as Microsoft has announced via a blog post.

When we say "finally," it’s because Apple has included support for external USB-C cameras on the iPad since iPadOS 17. So technically, Microsoft is a little late to the party with this feature. But if you have to use Microsoft Teams for work and you tend to use the iPad most of the time, then this is certainly welcome news.
