The wait for Intel’s next generation of CPU may soon be over, with a report suggesting that the chip giant will announce the new range at the Gamescom trade show in early august. That should also mean we’ll get our first look at the chips and perhaps even see them in action alongside some performance numbers.

It’s suggested that the show floor will have working versions of the Core i7-6700K and Core i5-6600K enthusiast focused chips, as well as the similarly marketed chipset, the Z170. What this means for shipping isn’t exactly clear, but Digitimes is reporting that we may see the first Core i7 and Core i5 chips arrive at retailers and on our doorsteps by late August.

It seems very likely that even if that turns out not to be true, early adopters will be able to get their hands on the new Skylake hardware by mid-September. Chances are the laptop versions of the chips will show up a little later, likely appearing at some point during Q4 to cash in on the Christmas electronics rush.

In the build up to the debuting of this new hardware, other manufacturers have been getting ready for the shift. Earlier this year major motherboard manufacturers like MSI and Asrock announced they would be showing off their first round of Skylake supporting motherboards in August, so even if this new rumored showing by Intel is false or pushed back, there should at least be some Skylake reveals in the next few weeks.

While of course most will wait to see the performance numbers and feature sets before upgrading, we would bet there’s a few of you who already have a few dollars squirreled away. What part of the line up are you eyeing for your next upgrade?

GAMESCOM Opening Night Live 2024 ONL: Official Livestream (Tuesday, August 20, 11a PT/2p ET/8p CEST)

While June may be the busiest month for video game showcases, the summer doesn't truly end until Gamescom Opening Night Live. The annual live stream, which kicks off the Gamescom convention in Germany, has become the biggest gaming show outside of Summer Game Fest. That's no coincidence considering that Geoff Keighley hosts both. This year's Opening Night Live was a major one, with over 60 reveals across the two-hour show (and a half hour pre-show beforehand).

Intel CPUs may get even hotter
Intel's 14900K CPU socketed in a motherboard.

It seems that Intel's next-gen CPUs might have a higher maximum temperature than some of the current top processors. According to a leak posted on X (formerly Twitter), Intel is said to be increasing the maximum thermal junction (TJ Max) temperature going forward.

The information comes from Jaykihn, a leaker who often shares information about Intel CPUs. Jaykihn claims that Intel is increasing the TJ Max in its upcoming CPUs, but only in the Arrow Lake and Panther Lake lineups, which are getting bumped up to 105 degrees Celsius. Lunar Lake CPUs are said to retain the 100 degrees Celsius maximum.

Intel’s next-gen Arrow Lake may introduce some major changes to desktop chips
Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger presents Intel's roadmap including Arrow Lake, Lunar Lake, and Panther Lake.

It's been a busy Computex for Intel, but one of its most exciting announcements -- at least for consumers -- slipped a little under the radar. The company will soon expand its portfolio of desktop processors with the next-gen Arrow Lake, and we now have a rough idea of when CPUs will hit the market and how much of an improvement we can expect. Interesting bonus: Some of the new Z890 motherboards will support CAMM2 memory.

According to Wccftech, Intel is planning to officially unveil Arrow Lake in September during the Intel Innovation event, and the processors will launch shortly after, sometime in October this year. Desktop users are the lucky ones here, as they're the ones who will get access to Arrow Lake first -- laptop chips will follow at an undisclosed date. However, laptop users already get plenty to sink their teeth into with this year's Lunar Lake.
