The Galaxy Xcover 3 is Samsung’s rugged smartphone on the cheap

Even though Samsung currently offers the Galaxy S6 Active for those of us who are a little more unforgiving with our smartphones, it’s just shy of $700 off contract. As a way to offer similar ruggedness in a cheaper package, Samsung now offers the sequel to last year’s Galaxy Xcover 2, the Samsung Galaxy Xcover 3.

The Galaxy Xcover 3 is powered by a quad-core Marvell Armada PXA1908 processor coupled with 1.5GB of RAM. The front reveals a 4.5-inch, PLS TFT 800-by-480 display, which looks to disappoint in both the resolution and off-angle viewing departments, even though the latter is helped by the PLS, or Plane Line Switching, technology. By itself, PLS allows a display to have improved viewing angles and image quality with higher brightness, even though the TFT nature of the display will prevent it from looking great when looking from the sides.

Turning the phone around reveals a 5-megapixel camera capable of 720p video recording, and while the 8GB of internal storage is pretty meager if you record video and take pictures, the MicroSD card slot allows up to 128GB of extra storage.

Where the Galaxy Xcover 3 begins to separate itself from other low-end smartphones is its IP67 certification, which protects it from dust while surviving in 1 meter of fresh water for 30 minutes. In addition, the Galaxy Xcover 3 is MIL-STD 810G certified. In other words, the handset is resistant to salt, humidity, rain, vibration, solar radiation, transport, and thermal shock.

If the Galaxy Xcover 3 looks like it might be up your alley, it’s now available for purchase through Amazon for $300. That much money might be hard to swallow, considering the specifications, but for those who don’t want to treat their smartphones as if they will break in the next few minutes, it might be a solid purchase, especially if specifications are secondary to your needs.

Mystery upcoming phone may see Asus copy Samsung’s playbook
A person holding the Asus ROG Phone 9 Pro.

In an odd development, Asus may be taking some naming inspiration from Samsung for an unexpected upcoming release. A phone named the ROG Phone 9 FE has been spotted in benchmarking tests, combining the familiar Asus ROG Phone 9 name with Samsung’s “FE” suffix, which stands for Fan Edition.

Asus only recently released the ROG Phone 9 and ROG Phone 9 Pro, and there was no mention of a third model at the time. While we may have expected an “Ultimate” version to arrive at some point, given how the company approached the ROG Phone 7 series, the FE model may be a step down in spec from the ROG Phone 9.

Conflicting reports on the Galaxy S25 Slim have me worried
The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra's camera lenses.

The Galaxy S25 Slim has been the subject of much discussion and speculation, but the latest leaks suggest it won't be coming to the US market — at least through any US-based carriers. It could still be available in different ways.

Evan Blass, a tipster responsible for a large amount of the information we know about the S25 series, posted on X that the S25 Slim "will almost certainly not be offered through US carriers. In the markets where it is offered, expect it to be positioned between the S25 Plus and Ultra, marketing- and price-wise."

We’re already getting hints about cool Galaxy S26 tech
Side profile of the Samsung Galaxy S24 FE.

The Samsung Galaxy S26 — yes, you read that correctly — might get a big battery life boost. Samsung's Galaxy Unpacked event is just five days away, poised and ready to reveal all the details about the Galaxy S25 lineup, so the last thing we expected was to hear whispers about the Galaxy S26 this early on, but after Samsung's reveal that it plans to use high-density battery tech in its wearables, the obvious question became: when will phones get it?

The Galaxy S26 might come with a silicon-carbon battery, according to tipster Jukanlosreve. They cite Ice Universe, another trusted leaker, as their source — and if that's true, then it lends credence to the rumor. Ice Universe has a particularly solid track record. Silicon-carbon batteries provide great energy density versus traditional batteries; in other words, they're smaller and hold both more charge and less heat potential.
