At least two new movies are going to be released in home-viewing formats much sooner than usual — with more hopefully on the way — thanks to a new deal Paramount has reached with AMC Theaters and Cineplex. Though limited in scope so far, the deal seeks to shorten the time from cinema to home theater, and if the trial takes off, it could change movie distribution timelines for good.

Time reports that the two upcoming movies in question, Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension and Scout’s Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, will be released on DVD and digital formats just two weeks their theatrical run shrinks to 300 theaters or less. Although theaters have traditionally pushed to have a longer window to maximize ticket sales, movie studios are trying to remain competitive as the entertainment industry becomes extremely saturated with various forms of content. According to Time, Paramount hopes to increase the number of films for which it can have an abbreviated release window and has even conceded some of the revenue from digital views, including iTunes downloads, to theater owners as an incentive.

With our binge-watching culture, we seem to be growing increasingly impatient when it comes to our entertainment, so Paramount’s move is understandable. On top of that, Netflix now doubles as a film studio, and the company plans to make certain movies available online on the same day that they open. The standard 90-day minimum release window that theaters have traditionally enjoyed may become a thing of the past.

Don’t expect the change to come easily, though. TIME previously reported that theater chains, including AMC, Regal, and Cinemark, are boycotting Netflix’s much-anticipated sequel to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in light of the release format. A Regal spokesman announced in a statement that “at Regal we will not participate in an experiment where you can see the same product on screens varying from three stories tall to [three inches] wide on a smart phone. We believe the choice for truly enjoying a magnificent movie is clear.”

For now, we’ll be happy with shorter release times. Best get your home theater ready!

Austin Butler drives alongside a motorcycle gang in The Bikeriders.

There have been plenty of critically acclaimed mainstream movies released in theaters and on streaming this year. There have, however, also been just as many great movies unveiled throughout this year that have unfortunately failed to capture any level of widespread audience attention. With that in mind and, given that there are fewer than two weeks to go before this year comes to an end, now seems like as good a time as any to look back at some of those 2024 movies and give them the second chance at breakthrough success that they deserve.

So, without any further ado, here are 10 underrated films that you probably missed this year.

The 10 best movies to watch on Christmas 2024
Jack Black as Satan Claus in Dear Santa.

There are no rules that say you have to watch a Christmas movie on Christmas. But it is absolutely the best time to watch Christmas movies, or at least Christmas-adjacent films. These stories don't tend to play the same way in March as they do in December. Plus, Christmas films have the added benefit of being family-friendly selections ... for the most part. Some Christmas action movies are probably best left for older viewers.

This year's selections for the 10 best movies to watch on Christmas are available on most of the major streamers, and include new films mixed with some older titles. Not every selection below is strictly Christmas-related, but they all share the Christmas spirit in one way or another.

The Godfather Part II at 50: Is this movie the greatest sequel ever made?
Al Pacino in The Godfather Part II.

Sequels are a way of life in Hollywood, and they've been around in some fashion since the dawn of cinema. But in 1974, it just wasn't common for an Oscar-winner for Best Picture to have a sequel two years later that won the same prize ... and more. Fifty years ago this month, The Godfather Part II changed the game for the industry and arguably surpassed The Godfather itself.

While many of The Godfather Part II's contemporary films -- like The Towering Inferno -- have faded from pop culture, this movie continues to influence every crime epic that came after it. It set the bar so high for a sequel that not even The Godfather Part III could come anywhere close to this film's heights. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Godfather Part II, we'll examine what makes the film resonate and determine whether it's the greatest sequel ever made.
The dual narratives are both compelling
