Looking for an app bargain to keep you occupied over the weekend, or into the future? If you own a device that runs iOS, then you’re in luck, because Apple has reduced the price many well-known apps available in the App Store.

A total of 100 games and apps are included in the promotion, which has its own splash page inside the store. It’s not clear how long the lower prices will remain, but the wording of the offer — “New Low Prices” — suggests it’s a long-term promotion, rather than one which may end next week.

Developers and studios taking part in the offer started tweeting about the price reductions on July 23, using the hashtag #AppStoreOffers, and the custom appstore.com/100 URL. Apple mentioned the new offer on the official App Store Twitter account several days before, saying the apps had been chosen by its editors.

The price has been set at $1 for each app, which represents a significant reduction for key titles. Notably, the image editing app Pixelmator previously cost $5, and it’s joined by Real Racing, GoodReader, and Badland — all of which also cost around the same price originally.

Separated into categories, the apps on offer fall into photography, productivity tools, children’s apps, games, and classics. The latter includes titles such as Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja, the aforementioned Real Racing, plus the excellent rhythm game Cytus. Games feature heavily throughout the promotion, with The Room Two, Goat Simulator, Need For Speed, Dead Space, and Cut The Rope 2 all taking center stage.

In the mobile photography section, the selfie-focused Facetune app sits alongside the Faded Photo Editor, Halftone 2, and Show Shutter Cam. While many apps have a one-time cost attached, a fair amount also include in-app purchases, which is something to consider before buying.

Ads won’t ruin your iPhone’s App Store — they may actually improve it
apple app store third party payment allow ugly side reality render

Apple sent out a note this week to app developers confirming that more advertising could be coming to the iPhone App Store in time for the holiday season. With the amount of advertising that already permeates the modern internet, the news has raised concerns that iPhone owners may soon find themselves wading through a sea of ads before they can find the app they’re looking for.

Anything can happen, so I can’t rule out the possibility that Apple could go too far on this one. However, I remain cautiously optimistic that Apple’s expanded advertising initiatives won’t ruin the App Store experience. It might even enhance it.
Apple’s App Store advertising ambitions
When you think of online advertising, Apple isn’t usually the first company that comes to mind. Most folks wouldn’t even include it in the top five. Other tech giants like Google, Meta (previously Facebook), and Amazon are generally the ones on the online advertising leaderboard.

This is how many iPhone apps Apple rejected in 2020
App store icon showing three notifications.

Apple has long maintained strict control over the App Store, arguing that doing so helps prevent things like malware, fraud, and other issues that could pop up if it didn't have that control. While the Apple-versus-Epic legal battle is raging on, Apple is touting its work in keeping the App Store safe -- and says that it rejected a hefty 1 million new apps in 2020, and an additional 1 million app updates.

There are a number of reasons why an app would be rejected from the App Store. For example, an app could be found to contain spam, or be built to manipulate users into making an in-app-purchase. Apple says that it rejected 150,000 apps that fall into this category in 2020, along with an additional 48,000 apps that contained hidden or undocumented features.
