Get your Scooby Snacks: Scoob and the gang are coming back to theaters

scooby doo returns to the big screen in 2018 animated film release date
Warner Bros.

Scooby, Shaggy, Fred, Velma, and Daphne are officially coming back to the silver screen. Warner Bros. has set Sept. 21, 2018 as the release date for the new animated feature film, according to Variety.

Unlike the most recent live-action theatrical releases, Scooby-Doo (2002) and Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed  (2004), the reboot will bring Scooby back to his roots in the animated world. However, Warner will be counting on two of the same producers from the live-action films— Charles Roven and Richard Suckle — to make another cinematic hit. Co-producer Allison Abbate (The Iron Giant, The Fantastic Mr. Fox) will assist Roven and Suckle in bringing the gang to life.

“It’s wonderful to be working with this talented and inspired team of filmmakers,” said Warner Bros. exec Sue Kroll in a statement. “We couldn’t ask for better producers than Charles Roven, Richard Suckle, and Allison Abbate, who have such affection and respect for this property and know the Hanna-Barbera universe so well.”

As expected, Warner — under its Warner Animation Group division — will be bringing out all of the stops for the latest iteration of one of the most celebrated cartoon franchises in Hanna-Barbera’s arsenal.

Tony Cervone, known for Space Jam and also a Scooby Doo franchise vet, will direct. Most recently, Cervone directed the animated film Scooby-Doo! and KISS: Rock and Roll Mystery (yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like); he also helmed the Cartoon Network TV series Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated from 2010 to 2014.

While Warner had scaled back its animated features since 2003’s Looney Tunes: Back in Action, Warner Animation Group scored a massive hit last year with The LEGO Movie. The studio is hoping that re-imagining these classic stars based originally on the 1969 animated TV show will be similarly successful.

“Like countless fans, I have always loved the Hanna-Barbera cast of characters,” said Warner Bros. president of creative development and worldwide production in a statement. “As one of their most famous brand ambassadors, Scooby-Doo will take the lead in reintroducing this pantheon of enduringly popular animated stars on a grand scale with an exciting new movie.”

Austin Butler brings back the King in first Elvis trailer
Austin Butler as Elvis.

The late Elvis Presley was such an iconic performer that we don't even have to refer to him by his full name. Elvis was the King of Rock and Roll, and now he's getting a lavish biopic from director Baz Luhrmann. Warner Bros. has debuted the first trailer from Elvis, with Austin Butler in the title role. And according to the studio, Butler is actually singing in the trailer with his best approximation of Elvis' famous voice.

The trailer also appears to take place from the point of view of Presley's manager, Colonel Tom Parker. Finch's Tom Hanks will portray Parker in the film, and he narrates a few scenes in the trailer while watching Elvis perform for the first time before deciding to make sure that their destinies are intertwined.

Back 4 Blood gets offline solo play and new cards next month
The Breaker towers over common zombies in Back 4 Blood.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment just released a Back 4 Blood road map of updates slated for later this year and into the next. The publisher tweeted out these end-of-year plans for the zombie multiplayer, with small details on soon-to-come features and content.

This month's updates mostly include quality-of-life improvements and major bug fixes. December introduces fresh features like supply lines, a Ridden Practice area, and a solo offline mode with campaign progression. This winter update also incorporates new card types and cards into the game's card system, which should mix up the meta as it is now.

Back 4 Blood is even more like Left 4 Dead than you may think — and that’s good
Back 4 Blood Stinger preparing to attack.

I was never the biggest Left 4 Dead fan, despite the huge impact both it and its sequel had on the world of gaming. Since then, players have been clamoring for a third game, as Valve retained the IP and developer Turtle Rock moved on to asymmetrical PvE game Evolve, which released in 2015 to a disastrous response.

At this year's Game Awards, fans' prayers were finally answered to a degree with the reveal of Back 4 Blood. Turtle Rock said it was returning to a multiplayer zombie game, and had no shame in drawing parallels on stage to Left 4 Dead, Valve be damned.
