First specs show LeTV’s Snapdragon 820 phone will be a monster

Forget about the Snapdragon 810, here's the first teaser for a Snapdragon 820 smartphone

Chinese company LeTV is the first to start teasing a smartphone using Qualcomm’s next major processor, the Snapdragon 820. It’s considerably ahead of the game, because the 820 has only recently been officially detailed by Qualcomm, and isn’t expected to be ready for sale until next year.

A teaser image posted on the firm’s Hong Kong Facebook page shows someone presenting the outline of a big-screen smartphone with “820” written in the center. LeTV describes the Snapdragon 820 as “the ultimate,” and indicates the new phone will be built around its capabilities.

In another leak published in China, the Snapdragon 820 smartphone will supposedly be named the Le Max 2, the successor to the original phablet. 6GB of RAM will come alongside the Snapdragon 820 processor. Those are monster specs, especially since the report also claims LeTV is planning to announce the smartphone before the end of the year, which would be before the Snapdragon 820 launch.

LeTV might be planning to announce the smartphone a few months before the official launch, to push the Le Max 2 in front of Xiaomi’s Mi 5, also expected to use the Snapdragon 820 processor.

Other specs for the Le Max 2 include a 5.7-inch 2,560 x 1,440-pixel display and a 23-megapixel rear camera. The camera will apparently be a Sony IMX300 sensor, with a f/2.0 aperture and 0.1 second superfast autofocus, the same sensor added to the Xperia Z5.

LeTV is a newcomer to the smartphone scene, and only announced its first devices back in April. The Le Superphone has a Snapdragon 810 inside, and although we’re still waiting for a final release date for the device, the intention is to put it on sale in the U.S. LeTV isn’t well-known outside China, but it’s a well-established company with 5,000 employees, and operates a streaming media network that will be part of its phone package.

And why would LeTV be so keen to talk about a Snapdragon 820-powered smartphone? Well, the 820 is set to be a considerable upgrade over the 808 and 810 chips we’re using at the moment. It’ll come with Qualcomm’s next-generation graphics chip that improves performance while delivering a 40-percent drop in power consumption, and a new camera system called Spectra, which will bring a range of additional benefits. These includes better image quality, low-light performance, and support for the simultaneous use of three cameras.

Qualcomm says devices powered by an 820 will arrive during the first half of 2016. That’s a pretty big window, and gives LeTV from six months to nearly a year of preparation time. There could be quite a wait before the company reveals anything else, but we’ll keep you updated here.

The Snapdragon 750G is Qualcomm’s latest 5G-enabled chipset for midtier phones
qualcomm 5g 4 series news

Qualcomm has been launching chip after chip with 5G support, and the company is back with another. The new Snapdragon 750G is built to deliver higher-end features and faster performance compared to the previous-generation Snapdragon 730G, and should make its way to the so-called "premium midtier" phones in the next year.

According to Qualcomm, there have been 275 device models built on 7-series chipsets, and 140 of those have been 5G designs. And that's only going to go up, as it's likely that most, if not all, of Qualcomm's future chipsets in the 7-series will support 5G. The Snapdragon 765 (and 765G) has already proven to be a great choice for $400-700 phones this year.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 690 processor brings 5G to midrange phones
qualcomm snapdragon 690 news

Qualcomm is amping up its midrange 6-series of chips. The company has taken the wraps off of the new Snapdragon 690 processor, which is now the highest-end offering in the 6-series, and is aimed at delivering some premium features to inexpensive phones.

Of course, there's one premium feature in particular to note here -- support for 5G. That makes the Snapdragon 690 the first platform in the 6-series to offer 5G support, meaning that much cheaper phones could soon support 5G.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 benchmarks push the iPhone 11 Pro and show strong A.I.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 system on chip (SoC) held using two fingers.

Qualcomm unveiled the new Snapdragon 865 mobile platform at its annual Snapdragon Summit, and we now finally have a better idea of exactly how the platform will perform. I was able to test the platform in a Qualcomm reference device, including putting it through a range of benchmark tests, and it's clearly an upgrade over last year's Snapdragon 855.

Before diving into actual scores, it's important to note a few things. The Snapdragon 865 actually has a performance mode, allowing it to offer more raw performance when enabled. Smartphone manufacturers, however, have to enable this mode, and it's unlikely many will do so. Why not? When performance mode is enabled, it has an impact on battery life, and considering the actual performance improvements won't be all that intense, it seems like the battery savings are worth keeping, though some niche phones might opt to offer it.
