“It” being the 2017 Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe, two-door counterpart to the C63 sedan that is already terrorizing cars from BMW’s M Division. The coupe is set to debut at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, but Mercedes decided to give a little tease first.
If you don’t blink, the carmaker actually shows you a lot of its new performance weapon in this video, while maintaining an air of secrecy by having the C63 remain in constant motion, and limiting the length of the video to just 17 seconds. That’s all we get for now, apparently.
As new-car unveilings go, there actually isn’t too much mystery surrounding the C63 Coupe. We already know that it will mix in the looks of the C-Class Coupe revealed last week with the hardware from the C63 sedan. It should be a pretty potent combination.
Expect the 4.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 from the Mercedes-AMG GT to appear here. In the C63 sedan, it produces a healthy 469 horsepower in 479 pound-feet of torque in “standard” guise, and 503 hp and 516 lb-ft in the C63 S model.
The sedan’s seven-speed automatic transmission will likely carry over, sending all of that sound and fury to the rear wheels. Other performance hardware, such as a locking rear differential and adaptive suspension, should carry over as well. The four-door C63 S can do 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds; we’ll see if the coupe can improve on that or not.
Just as the C63 sedan competes most directly against the BMW M3, the coupe will challenge the M4. It should have a power advantage over the BMW’s 425-hp, twin-turbocharged inline-six, but power isn’t everything. Mercedes may also need to conjure a new Black Series model to match the upcoming M4 GTS in hardcore territory.
We’ll have full details on the 2017 Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe soon, so watch this space.
