The XPS 12 is not a new device from Dell, as the name was previously used for Dell’s 12.5-inch laptop with a display that rotated 180-degrees to allow users to work with it like a tablet. Now, according to a leak from German site Giga, the name is coming back, but this time it’s going to be a Windows tablet with a detachable keyboard, more along the lines of Microsoft’s Surface Pro.

Getting into the reported details of the laptop, the new XPS 12 will come with a 12 inch, 3,840 x 2,160 (4K) display. And like the extremely well-received XPS 13 laptop, it looks like Dell will be using what it calls its Infinity Display, which essentially means there’s almost no bezel around the outside of the screen.

The main thing that makes this stand out over the previous XPS 12 is the detachable keyboard dock that will allow the tablet to be used as a laptop. It will attach to the tablet via magnets, and will feature backlit keys and a standard touch pad. For an alternative input method, the report indicates that Dell’s pressure-sensitive stylus will work with the new device as well.

According to the leak, there’s going to be Thunderbolt 3 with a USB Type-C connector. This will allow buyers of the hybrid to connect it to an external display or transfer data at extremely high speeds.

The report indicates that the new XPS 12 will feature an 8 MP rear-facing camera and a 5 MP front-facing camera.

There are some key specs about the device that we don’t know, such as how much RAM it will feature and which processor will be installed. Though we’d guess there will be a fanless Skylake Intel Core M chip, as that seems to be the standard for these types of devices. If the report is correct, we should find everything out by October when the device is expected to launch.

Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 vs. Surface Pro 8: New competition

Microsoft's Surface Pro 8 has reigned supreme as the best detachable 2-in-1 laptop around and made its way to our list of best laptops overall. It's a redesign that brought slimmer display bezels and a larger 13-inch display, along with faster components and Thunderbolt 4 ports.

The Surface Pro 8 has some new competition, though. Dell has announced the first detachable tablet in its XPS line, replacing the previous 360-degree convertible design. The XPS 13 2-in-1 offers Intel 12th-gen CPUs and a competitive design. Can it overtake the Surface Pro 8?

How the new Dell XPS 13 borrows phone tech for its radical redesign
The internals of the old XPS 13 compared to the new one.

"We didn't want to wait for PCs to catch up to smartphones."

According to those at Dell I spoke with, that was the motto behind the sweeping internal changes to the new Dell XPS 13. As laptops like the new MacBook Air rush toward thinner designs and more efficient, phone-like processors, companies like Dell are being forced into a corner. Wait for its manufacturing partners and chip suppliers to catch up or push the technology forward on its own terms.
