The future of vacuums and beyond? Dyson acquires experimental solid-state battery startup

UK-based home appliance supplier Dyson has agreed to acquire Michigan-startup Sakti3 for $90 million. The deal was closed on September 25, and Sakti3 will become part of Dyson, continuing work on experimental battery technology.

It is another validation that solid-state battery tech is the future. Sakti3 is researching how to implement this solid-state tech inside appliances.

sakti3-founder-with-batteryDyson creates plenty of appliances that require batteries, and having a much more safe and efficient solution could save millions in costs. It would also open up a new market for Dyson, to sell the batteries or patents to companies that want the solid-state solution.

Solid-state batteries remove the liquid electrolytes, which eliminates the possibility of a chemical reaction or overheating. It also reduces the size of batteries by 20 to 30 percent, while providing the same amount of energy. The batteries are scalable from a wearable to an electric car, offering advantages for all types of battery powered products. The company is still about three years from putting the batteries in Dyson vacuums, according to Fortune.

Dyson had already invested $15 million in Sakti3 and the startup counted General Motors as another major investor. The startup was named one of the 50 Smartest Companies 2015 in MIT Technology Review.

In a time where battery companies are going under seemingly every week or having their talent poached by Apple, Sakti3 managed to last seven years through strong funding.

Sakti3 chief executive Ann Marie Sastry met with President Obama to discuss the solid-state batteries at the White House Demo Day earlier this year. Since then, we haven’t heard much from the startup, and we don’t know when the two companies first discussed a deal.

Figuring out how to implement solid-state batteries in everyday appliances could bring a huge surge in battery sales. Dyson might have scooped up the front runner in the race; now all it needs to do is find out a way to make it usable in its vacuums.

Tesla Powerwall is the best solar, home backup, and EV charging companion
Tesla Powerwall 3 installed on outside of home

Solar power, and having solar panels on your home, is a fantastic way to conserve energy and cut down on power bills, especially if you live somewhere sunny like Florida or California. There's just one glaring issue. When the grid goes down you still lose power because of how it's connected. Your solar panels cannot generate enough energy or keep it stored to keep your power on. So, essentially, your power setup doesn't offer much benefit there, unless you get a home power backup system. More specifically, something like a Tesla Powerwall is a compact home battery that stores energy generated from the grid. That energy is then used as a backup when traditional grid power is unavailable.

To make it even more clear, with a Tesla Powerwall, the power stays on even during a major blackout or outage. It's whole-home backup, too, which means you can power your lights, appliances, electronics, you name it. If you've ever had to throw away an entire refrigerator's worth of spoiled food because of a multi-day outage -- like I have -- you'll certainly appreciate the option to keep your appliances running. But that's not all it can do. The Tesla Powerwall is an excellent companion for Tesla EV owners, creating an entire smart ecosystem of power. Let's explore.

Chamberlain myQ Smart Garage Security Camera -- $27 $50 45% off

While this is ostensibly made for your garage, there's no reason the Chamberlain myQ Smart Garage can't work for other uses as well, especially if you don't need the highest quality of recording. It has an HD camera, which isn't a ton, but it does have an impressive 130-degree field of view. The MyQ also connects through dual-band Wi-Fi for a better connection, and it even has two-way communication, which is impressive for something at this price bracket.
