The ‘Wah-Wah’ master: Trombone Shorty to ‘play’ the adults in upcoming Peanuts Movie

From Charlie Brown’s parents to his incomprehensible teacher, the only voice audiences will hear from adult characters in the upcoming Peanuts Movie will actually not be a voice at all. In fact, the repetitive sound of their brassy “Wah-Wahs” will be played by none other than musical prodigy Trombone Shorty.

A 29-year-old trumpet and trombone player from the New Orleans, Shorty is actually just the most recent trombone player to play the small-but-important role in the Peanuts universe; In the 50 years adult characters have existed on screen, they have always been voiced by the sliding brass instrument.

Given Peanuts’ jazz-heavy history — with pianist Vince Guaraldi writing and performing the vast majority of the now-iconic music for the Charlie Brown specials of the 1960s — picking another up-and-coming jazz musician to be a part of the new film is a logical choice.

Shorty, born Troy Andrews, began playing professionally as a young teenager, started touring with Lenny Kravitz at the age of 19, and then went on to play the major festival circuit with his own band, Orleans Avenue. And he’s not new to on-screen productions; the trombonist was also featured prominently on HBO’s New Orleans-based series Treme.

The Peanuts Movie will be the first feature film adventure for the cast of the much-beloved comic book franchise in over 35 years, and director Steve Martino wanted to keep the on-screen audio as authentic as possible.

But, because the name of the original trombone player that worked for Vince Guaraldi on the first specials has been lost to time, and the composer himself passed away in 1976, it took a little time to get the sound right.

“Trombone Shorty came in with a little arsenal,” said Martino in a recent interview with Mashable. “I didn’t realize there were so many different kinds of plungers or mutes. We tried many different styles and found one particular one that gave us just the right sound.”

So right, in fact, that the marketing team behind the upcoming film recently released an app called “The Wah Wah Machine,” which uses the new recordings of Shorty to make anything users say into a phrase of “Wah Wahs.”

It’s a fun little toy to keep fans excited until the film hits theaters on November 5. Just make sure you don’t use it too much on your significant other, blockheads.

Upcoming movies: New movie release dates in 2023 and 2024
Timothée Chalamet in Wonka.

Earlier this month, we took a look at the most anticipated movies of fall 2023. But now, it's time to look ahead at all of the upcoming movies set for release in late 2023 and early 2024.

As you may have heard, the word out of Hollywood is that the WGA and the AMPTP have reached a tentative deal to end the writers' strike. Presumably ending the SAG-AFTRA strike will be the next thing on the agenda. This is important to keep in mind for the upcoming movies because all films and TV shows have been at a standstill for months, and the 2024 release dates are tentative at best. That's one of the reasons why the 2024 schedule looks so empty at the moment. There's a lot of work that needs to be done by both the writers and the actors before a lot of these movies are going to be ready, so don't be too shocked if the release dates change again. Some of them could even slip into 2025.

Who should play Robin in the Batman: The Brave and the Bold movie?
Robin jumps from a plane in a DC comic.

Damian Wayne is no slouch. "I'm not like Tim, or Jason, or even Dick. I'm light-years ahead of all the past Robins in skill and training. I'm either your partner in this or I'm not." Pretty blunt words coming out of the mouth of a youngster. But in all fairness, Damian Wayne is, perhaps, one of the most fascinating Robins to ever partner with Batman, his father. He never minces words and is forthright in his actions. Trained from a young age to be a killer in the League of Assassins, Damian has his own view on how criminals should be handled: they should be killed. But when Bruce takes his son under his wing as a crime-fighting partner, the two experience a few growing pains in their Dynamic Duo as their moral standings clash.

Damian Wayne is the Robin that is set to appear in the upcoming Batman and Robin film, The Brave and the Bold. Created by famed DC comics author Grant Morrison, Damian Wayne isn't your average Boy Wonder, and it's going to take skilled talent in order to capture this youngster's bravado, intellect, and warrior spirit in live-action. In the DC comics source material, Damian Wayne is 10 years old when his father first meets him and learns of his existence. As a Robin, Damian dons the suit for years, eventually becoming a young teen. With that in mind, we'll examine some of the best casting prospects for this famous Batman sidekick.

5 upcoming horror movies you have to see in 2023
Ghostface shows his knife in Scream VI.

There's no doubt that 2022 was a great year for horror films, with Scream, Barbarian, Smile, and Speak No Evil scoring not only with audiences, but critics as well. Even B movies like Orphan: First Kill and Terrifier 2 were better than they had any right to be, providing the slasher genre with a deep bench of highbrow and lowbrow hits for fans to choose from.

The good news is that 2023 promises to be no different. With M3GAN ruling the box office with her murderous TikTok dance moves, the horror genre is poised to reap even more success this year with a slate full of worthy originals, reboots, sequels, and adaptations. These films have the most potential to be just as good as their 2022 brothers and sisters.
