The upcoming Wonder Woman movie already has its leading lady and her love interest, and now the project is reportedly adding some serious star power in the form of Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman.
The casting of Kidman in a mystery role was first reported by The Wrap, and has yet to be confirmed by Warner Bros. Pictures. According to the report, Kidman will play “a high-ranking Amazonian warrior” in the film, leading to speculation that she’ll play Wonder Woman’s mother, Queen Hippolyta.
If the report proves true, Kidman will join previously announced cast members Gal Gadot and Chris Pine, who will play the DC Comics superhero and her love interest, Steve Trevor, respectively.
In the wake of the news, there has also been speculation that Kidman might play Circe, a sorceress who has been a frequent foe of Wonder Woman over the years.
A three-time Academy Award nominee and a winner for her role in 2002’s The Hours, Kidman has some experience with DC Comics properties thanks to her featured role in 1995’s Batman Forever. She played Dr. Chase Meridian in that film, which starred Val Kilmer as Batman, Tommy Lee Jones as Two-Face, Jim Carrey as The Riddler, and Chris O’Donnell as Robin.
Now set to be directed by Patty Jenkins (Monster), Wonder Woman was initially planned as a project for Breaking Bad director Michelle McLaren, but the filmmaker left the project back in April 2015 due to creative differences with the studio. Jenkins was announced as the new director a short time later.
Although the film is currently scheduled to premiere in 2017, Gadot will make her debut as Wonder Woman in next year’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. After her solo film, Wonder Woman is also expected to play an important role in Justice League: Part One later that year.
Wonder Woman will arrive in theaters June 23, 2017.
