What happens when Star Wars gets the Honest Trailers treatment?

Honest Trailers - Star Wars
Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens hits theaters a month from today, so it’s no surprise that the Honest Trailers crew have finally decided to turn their attention to the movie that started it all: George Lucas’ 1977 masterpiece,

Star Wars.

From Luke Skywalker’s whiny attitude to the title change and “special edition” edits, this installment of the hit video series doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to the sci-fi classic.

Refusing to call the movie by its officially changed title, Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, the video goes on to offer a pretty spot-on critique of the film and provide a preview that’s more in line with what you’d really see if you watched the 1977 film today. While hardcore fans might be horrified by some of the insults tossed at Lucas’ genre-defining movie, it’s difficult not to find some truth in some of the assessments of Star Wars.

Juxtaposing scenes of Mark Hamill’s complaining Luke Skywalker in Star Wars with scenes of Hayden Christensen’s similarly pouty (and much-maligned) portrayal of Anakin Skywalker in the prequel films, the narrator has a revelation of sorts and remarks, “Wait, so Hayden Christensen’s acting choices were intentional? Whoa.”

Later, the video’s Star Wars commentary gets derailed a bit when discussing Lucas’ controversial edits to the film that saw him adding various CG creatures and other elements to the original film. As with much of the Honest Trailers commentary, many of the rants are as funny as they are valid.

Oh, and the Honest Trailers team gets bonus points for including the famous — or possibly infamous — scene in which a stormtrooper hits his head against the blast door in the background of a scene midway through the film.

Given how far off the premiere of The Force Awakens is at this point, we can probably expect to see similar video commentaries for The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi between now and December 18 when The Force Awakens arrives in theaters.

What’s new on Disney+ in November 2024
A masked Ryan Reynolds covers his mouth as Hugh Jackman glowers in a still from the movie "Deadpool & Wolverine."

Thanks to Disney's big summer at the box office, Disney+ gets to bring home the second-highest-grossing movie of the year in November. Deadpool & Wolverine is making its streaming debut on November 12, but it's not the only noteworthy new addition to Disney+. If you've ever loved the Star Wars and Indiana Jones themes of John Williams, then you should watch the new documentary Music By John Williams, which is available on Disney+ as of November 1.

A really charming Christmas-related animated short, An Almost Christmas Story, is arriving on November 15, while Beatles '64 adds yet another Beatlemania documentary to Disney+ on November 29. On that same date, Disney is also celebrating the 60th anniversary of Mary Poppins this month by releasing a special documentary about one of Walt Disney's personal favorite films. And finally, Disney gets to capitalize on the release of Wicked by bringing Oz the Great and Powerful to Disney+ near the end of November.

Star Wars’ Daisy Ridley reveals why she finds her return as Rey ‘scary’
Daisy Ridley as Rey in The Rise of Skywalker.

Last year, Lucasfilm announced a handful of promising new film projects set within the Star Wars universe, including one that will follow Rey (Daisy Ridley) as she attempts to rebuild the Jedi Order following the events of 2019's Star Wars: Episode IX — The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy subsequently confirmed in an interview with IGN that the film will take place 15 years after the conclusion of Star Wars' Sequel Trilogy and will find the Jedi "in disarray" and Rey trying to rebuild the Order "based on the books, based on what she promised Luke (Mark Hamill)."

Since then, progress on the project has been slow. Its original writers, Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson, departed the project in March 2023, and their replacement, Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, reportedly parted ways with the film recently as well. For her part, Daisy Ridley has remained fairly tight-lipped about the project and its status. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, though, she did open up about actually preparing to reprise her life-changing Star Wars role.
