Comedian Kevin James and actress Zulay Henao (The Single Mom’s Club) will follow Adam Sandler and others into the Netflix film mafia. The duo are set to co-star in an upcoming Netflix original film called True Memoirs of an International Assassin, with casting of Henao recently announced as the female lead, according to Variety.

In the new movie, James plays an accountant who publishes a fictional novel from the perspective of a modern day assassin, then finds himself mistaken for the real thing when the book is accidentally published as nonfiction. His character then flees his boring office in the United States and heads to Belize, where he meets Henao, who plays a DEA agent that blows her cover to save James from a drug lord — and high jinks abound, no doubt.

A comedic adventure flick much in the same style as the critically-panned Paul Blart: Mall Cop franchise, the new film will hopefully raise the bar from James’ recent repertoire, which includes another box office disappointment in the Adam Sandler film Pixels.

Wishful thinking aside, we’re not likely to see this release praised any more than James’ latest work, with a script coming from Jeff Morris — whose biggest project to date was 2014’s Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever — and producers who were largely involved in the Paul Blart films. But the studio did get a solid director to helm the project in Jeff Wadlow, a Pearl Harbor actor who has spent the last 14 years in a behind-the-lens role, and recently shot superhero flick Kick Ass 2.

Netflix purchased the distribution rights to the project at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, and the company intends to make it into a straight-to-internet release. Shooting for True Memoirs of an International Assassin started in the Dominican Republic this November.

Given the recent casting of Henao, and the fact that production only began this month, the new film will likely hit screens for the first time in mid-late 2016.

3 underrated movies you need to watch in January 2025
Six men sit on a boat in The Damned.

It's always disconcerting for moviegoers to go from December, which typically sees an avalanche of high-profile and high-quality films like All of Us Strangers and The Brutalist, to January, which has given us such non-classics as The 355 and The Beekeeper. And January 2025 seems like it will offer more of the same with the Gerard Butler action sequel Den of Thieves 2: Pantera and the Blumhouse horror flick Wolf Man.

Yet if you look closer, you'll see there are a half-dozen movies in the month that promise to be actually good. Shocking, right? The following three films are the best of a small bunch, movies that span genres like horror, anime, and thriller, but all promise the same thing: a good time. What more can one ask for in the new year?

Denis Villeneuve sitting with Rebecca Ferguson on the set of "Dune: Part Two."

2024 saw many gifted directors shake up the media as they developed a bevy of crowd-pleasing hits. Some released big-budget blockbusters like Dune: Part Two and Deadpool & Wolverine that dominated theaters and streaming.

Even though some directed smaller indie projects with low box-office returns, masterpieces like Anora and Queer still premiered to outstanding reviews and plenty of buzz this awards season. Though several directors made a splash in the sea of cinema and TV in 2024, these seven artists sailed their way into the spotlight as they achieved the most from their craft this year.

We failed Furiosa, one of 2024’s best movies. Here’s why it will live forever
Anya Taylor-Joy stands on a dusty road and glances over her shoulder in a still from "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga."

It’s pretty silly to get hung up on how much money a movie makes. To obsess over box office is to think like a studio executive — or maybe worse, like the “analysts” who fill trade columns with their salivating desire to see, say, Kevin Costner lose his shirt on an ambitious, big-swing passion project like Horizon: An American Saga. “Movies live forever,” the actor-director told IndieWire this past summer. “It’s not about the opening weekend.” Amen to that, brother.
