Apple AirPlay devices may be a direct competitor to Google Chromecast platform, but that didn’t stop the search giant from adding Airplay support for Google Play Movies & TV. Among other things, the new feature means users can stream content from Google’s huge library of titles from iPhones and iPads to their Apple TVs.
Previously, iOS users had to own a Chromecast device to watch Google Play movies and TV shows on their HDTV. With the update, they can now stream content from a Google Play account to any third-generation or newer Apple TV, as described on the app’s iTunes page. (System software 7.0 or above is required in order for your Apple TV to be compatible.)
In addition to now working with AirPlay, the Google Play app for iOS has been redesigned. New features include HD and cellular streaming, according to Google Play Movies & TV’s iTunes page. There’s also a new look to the app.
Google’s addition of AirPlay support to the app may come as a surprise to some, given the competition between the companies’ digital media streamers and mobile devices. But the sheer volume of iPhone and iPad users may have been irresistible, making it worth it to Google to tap into the market, even if many users will be streaming through an Apple TV instead of a Chromecast device. After all, Apple had over a 43 percent market share when comScore looked at smartphone users in the U.S. over the three months ending in September.
At the same time, Google’s move may indicate faith in Chromecast to easily best its pricier competition. The $35 device has proven to be especially successful as of late, topping Q3’s non-gaming digital media streaming device sales, according to a report by Strategy Analytics.
Whatever Google’s reasoning, AirPlay support for Google Play Movies & TV is good news for iOS users, as it gives them another option for streaming.
