The BMW M4 GTS takes the notion of turning a volume production model into a rare special edition to a new extreme. Based on the already-special M4, the GTS will be limited to just 700 units worldwide, and those cars won’t leave the factory very quickly.
M4 GTS production will proceed at the rate of just five units per day, according to De Telegraaf. Those cars will be built at the same facility that assembles the M6 GT3 and M135i Cup race cars, although they’ll start out as standard 4 Series coupes from the same production line as ordinary models. Once they get to the specialized facility, though, they’re in for quite a transformation.
The M4’s 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six gets a boost from 425 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque to 493 hp and 442 lb-ft. It also gets a BMW-first water-injection system for more efficient combustion. The GTS also loses about 200 pounds compared to the standard M4, and gets improved suspension. You’ll spot one instantly thanks to that big rear spoiler and those distinctive wheels.
All of this adds up to what BMW claims is the quickest production car it’s ever made. The M4 GTS will do 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, while top speed is limited to 189 mph. The car also managed a 7:27.88 lap of the Nürburgring, actually putting it slightly ahead of bona fide supercars like the Ferrari 458 Italia, Porsche Carrera GT, and McLaren MP4-12C.
Only a handful of buyers will get to experience that performance though. BMW will build just 700 copies of the M4 GTS, including 300 for the U.S., 50 for Canada, 30 for the U.K., and 320 for the rest of the world to fight over. Production is set to start in March, but at the rate of five units per day, it could be awhile before the last M4 GTS is delivered.
