20 of the best Dolby Atmos movies to watch in your home theater

Dolby Atmos is one of the absolute best ways to experience surround sound, both at home and in movie theaters. And when it comes to the former, the immersive sound codec isn’t in limited supply. There are hundreds of excellent movies that are encoded with Atmos’ immersive sound. The only thing you’ll need to get the party started is the right Atmos compatible A/V gear (TV, speakers, Blu-ray player, A/V receiver), and the right movies to knock your socks off.

Nowadays, you can find Dolby Atmos in a wider range of places than ever, including with select movies and shows across a number of streaming platforms, such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, and Disney+. And, of course, one of the best ways to experience Dolby Atmos is through the thousands of Blu-ray DVDs available.

Without further ado, here’s our roundup of the best Dolby Atmos movies you can own at home. We also dive a little on the Atmos format itself here, with a few important things to consider when readying your living room and subscription plans for Atmos sound.

Denis Villeneuve is no stranger when it comes to sci-fi epics (you’ll also find his mesmerizing Blade Runner 2049 on this list), so it came as no surprise to many of us that his phenomenal reimagining of the Dune saga would hit just as hard. In terms of its sound experience, this is one of the best movies to experience the immersive Atmos format with, and the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences agreed, awarding the masterpiece with the Best Sound and Best Original Score Oscars at the 2022 fete. Atmospheric, bombastic when it needs to be, articulate and detailed, and featuring brilliant mixing for composer Hans Zimmer’s masterful score, the otherworldly Dune makes perfect use of Dolby Atmos to put you right in the middle of this incredible hero’s journey.  Buy Dune on Blu-ray from Amazon

When it comes to delivering the maximum surround sound experience, action movies are a go-to for many audiophiles, and for good reason. And thanks to John Wick (he’s on this list, too) and all of our Marvel superhero friends, the genre is experiencing a redefined, pulse-pounding era of expressivity, especially when it comes to sound mixing. Which brings us to Nobody: A Bob Odenkirk action-vehicle that pits the everyman with a secret military past against hordes of vicious baddies. Nobody‘s fight scenes are explosive, with fists, feet, bullets, and all manner of found objects flying past your from all directions. The audio is rich, loud, and detailed to the max, with it all landing perfectly. Dialogue and music receive plenty of attention and articulation in the mix-space, too.  Buy Nobody on Blu-ray from Amazon

Alfonso Cuaron’s 2013 masterpiece drew praise for its sound design and cinematography, which combined to give viewers the sensation of being in space. Following a pair of astronauts adrift in space after their Space Shuttle is destroyed by debris, Gravity explores their personalities and relationship against the backdrop of the cold, all-encompassing void. Dolby Atmos is a great format for the film, where the position and movement of sounds are key to immersing viewers in the physics of space. The chirping of machines, headset chatter bouncing around in the astronauts’ helmets, and of course, Steven Price’s stirring, layered score all mesh together to create soundscapes unlike anything else in Hollywood cinema. If you have an Atmos setup and want to show it off to friends, Gravity is easily one of the most impressive experiences available.  Buy Gravity on Blu-ray from Amazon

Did you think that John Wick and its sequel were wild? You ain’t seen nothing yet. In John Wick 3, Keanu Reeves’ hitman finds himself outlawed by the High Table, the assassins’ governing body that has placed a $14 million bounty on him — a figure that goes up every hour. From its balletic gunfights to a high-speed sword duel against a motorcycle gang, John Wick: Chapter 3 is a blood-soaked delight from beginning to end, and hearing each and every bullet whiz through your living room is a great way to show off your Dolby Atmos system. If you like speed, then Wick‘s motorcycle chase scene will blow your hair back in Atmos, with the detailed and realistic sounds of the urban scenery whizzing by and the high revs of motorcycle engines notching things up. The John Wick series is the most innovative franchise of the 2010s. Watching it with anything less than the best sound mix you can find is a mistake.  Buy John Wick 3 on Blu-ray from Amazon

It’s rather unusual for a film to receive the prestigious Criterion Collection designation only a year or two after its theatrical release, but Uncut Gems is simply that good. This special edition 4K Blu-ray features two visual encodings of the flick, one in 4K and the other in 2K, with an emotive Dolby Atmos mix as the default audio codec for both iterations. Uncut Gems is a rapid-fire boxing-match of dialogue from start to finish, conversations that the Atmos mix does a fair job of tapping into, at least delivering on the most vital exchanges. But where the mix truly shines is in the masterful propulsion of composer Oneohtrix Point Never’s experimental score. Like a kinetic rollercoaster of tension-meets-release, the cybernetic melodies rise and fall in an ultra-symphonic manner. Thanks to Dolby Atmos, a score has never sounded so good.  Buy Uncut Gems on Blu-ray from Amazon

Black Panther obliterated expectations and set box-office records on the back of incredible direction from Ryan Coogler (Creed) and a sparkling ensemble performance from a cast including Sterling K. Brown, Forest Whitaker, and Michael B. Jordan. The Marvel movie focuses on T’Challa (the late Chadwick Boseman), the superpowered leader and guardian of Wakanda. Jordan’s character, Killmonger, intrudes on this utopia, fracturing Wakandan politics and endangering the world with radical plans. Coogler — aided by Kendrick Lamar — underscores all of Wakanda’s shine with a gritty, hip-hop-inspired soundtrack that will sound even better on an Atmos system. The fight scenes, particularly in the South Korean casino, have depth and height, with things flying everywhere, but it’s when it spills out on to the streets and launches into an epic car chase, things get even more sonically intense.  Buy Black Panther on Blu-ray from Amazon

Director Edgar Wright is known for straying off the cinematic beaten path — like in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and the hilarious Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy — and Baby Driver is no exception. The film follows Baby (Ansel Elgort), an ace driver who finds himself simultaneously courting a beautiful waitress (Lily James) and trying to extricate himself from a dangerous gang of criminals led by Buddy (Jon Hamm) and Doc (Kevin Spacey). Wright creatively blends the film’s sound effects into Baby’s music choices — he’s always got his earbuds going, thanks to some nasty tinnitus — turning a slick heist setup into something entirely different. The opening car chase scene is one of the best on film, and you’ll want to hear it on Dolby Atmos.  Buy Baby Driver on Blu-ray from Amazon

Avengers: Infinity War is the first half of the epic ending of the Avengers saga (Endgame could easily be on this list, too) that pits many of Marvel’s iconic superheroes against supervillain Titan Thanos (Josh Brolin), who will stop at nothing to acquire all six Infinity Stones that he’ll use to wipe out half of the life in the universe in a misguided attempt to bring it back into balance. La La Land is a unique throwback and a stylish ode to classic Hollywood cinema. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone play a pair of young Los Angelenos — a struggling jazz pianist and an aspiring actress, naturally — who come together following a series of coincidental meetings. In classic fashion, the film establishes musical themes with regular reprises, as scenes suddenly become massive musical numbers and then morph back into regular, everyday life. La La Land proves that Atmos surround sound doesn’t always have to be about big action and whizzing bullets, but can just as easily transport viewers to any place and time with music and atmosphere, in this case, fantastical LA. Critics gushed over Damien Chazelle’s use of contemporary tech to produce an old-school story, and there’s nothing quite like hearing chorus voices from every direction.  Buy La La Land on Blu-ray from Amazon

Watching the Merc With a Mouth (Ryan Reynolds) kill a bunch of bad guys while making cringe-worthy jokes was a treat in theaters, but it’s an even better time when you’re laughing along with your friends and family at home. Your Dolby Atmos system can handle any explosion, gunshot, and punch you throw its way, but what about flatulence? Does that deserve the Atmos treatment? The answer, apparently, is yes. When Swiss Army Man premiered at Sundance in 2016, people walked out of the theater due to its dumb and excessive fart jokes (and missed out as a result), but behind this setup — in which a suicidal man on a desert island finds a corpse — lies a thoughtful, funny story about human connections and expressing who you are. The film might not be for everyone, but it caught the attention of NPR, which interviewed the directors and went into great detail over the metaphor behind a farting corpse. More importantly for our purposes, the movie uses its effects cleverly to create a dense and immersive aural environment that will pull you into its strange story.  Buy Swiss Army Man on Blu-ray from Amazon

Set some 28 years after the events of Ridley Scott’s 1982 classic, the movie follows Officer K (Ryan Gosling), a replicant — the movie’s term for android — who is tasked with hunting down and “retiring” older replicant models. In the course of his work, he stumbles across a conspiracy, which in turn begins to unlock memories that — by all accounts — he shouldn’t have. The film is striking and visually lush, packed with gorgeous details that flesh out K’s futuristic Los Angeles and the locales he visits in his investigation, including the eerie wasteland outside the city where K and Joi speed to in their flying car. We hear the low rumble of waterfalls exiting the city’s huge barrier wall, but then things get deafly quiet as Hans Zimmer’s (of course) score accentuates the vastness of the empty landscape with soaring horns and haunting voices. Director Denis Villeneuve somehow manages to pay tribute to the original film while telling a wholly new story that ties into the events of the first Blade Runner.   Buy Blade Runner 2049 on Blu-ray from Amazon

Mother! is one of the most controversial films in recent memory, causing some critics to gush and some to walk out of the theater in abject misery. Darren Aronofsky’s metaphorical home invasion horror follows Mother (Jennifer Lawrence), who lives with her husband (Javier Bardem) in an isolated house. Suddenly, two visitors show up (Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer), quickly followed by their sons, who turn Mother’s paradise into a kind of living hell. The movie progresses from an idyllic beginning into a frenzied, sin-soaked nightmare party, with particular detail paid to cinematography and sound design — with all the creepy and gradually-intensifying sounds from the house (creaks, moans, rattling pipes) coming from Mother’s perspective. Whether to take the red pill or the blue pill remains one of the most iconic decisions in film history — to stay asleep and controlled or wake up and learn the truth. That’s the dilemma raised in The Matrix. In the movie, a group of freedom fighters led by Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne), have freed themselves from the bondage of a dystopian reality in which machines have enslaved humans for energy. Morpheus recruits Neo (Keanu Reeves), a rogue computer programmer, to fight back, free humanity, and destroy the virtual reality “Matrix” in which they’re held captive. The movie is a wild mix of science fiction, action, and groundbreaking VFX (or at least the effects were groundbreaking in 1999). It all builds to an edge-of-your-seat experience. Dolby Atmos on streaming services

Dolby Atmos has come a long way in terms of its availability beyond DVDs and Blu-ray discs, and is more widely available on many of the major streaming services.

If you’re already paying for a Netflix subscription, you can get Dolby Atmos on Netflilx. Netflix does have a fair number of Atmos movies and TV show titles to stream, but you’ll need a plan that supports Ultra HD (4K) streaming. Set your streaming quality to High or Auto, then look for titles with the Atmos logo next to the description. Netflix’s support for Dolby Atmos varies from device to device, and that list changes regularly.

If you want to show off your home theater setup, Disney+ also offers Dolby Atmos sound mixes on selected content, including the Marvel movies and every single Star Wars flick, including the original trilogy. Even better, you won’t need to pay extra. Atmos, 4K, and Dolby Vision HDR are included in Disney+’s standard $8/month subscription fee.

Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, Vudu, and HBO Max are some of the other services to offer Atmos support. As with Netflix, you’ll want to browse those services’ libraries (see all of

Vudu’s UHD content here

) and look for the Dolby Atmos logo.

Digital copies vs. Blu-ray

In some cases, you’ll need to buy (or rent) a physical Blu-ray copy to get the full Dolby Atmos experience. While a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray isn’t necessary to get Atmos sound, it’s often not included with the 1080p Blu-ray version. Most on-demand streaming services — some of which also act as hosts for purchased digital copies — do not support Dolby Atmos. That includes the Google Play Store. Although iTunes supports Atmos on select titles, you’ll need an Apple TV 4K to get that level of quality.

With the upgraded Movies Anywhere program, most any digital film you own there — assuming it’s not ineligible — should automatically transfer into your Vudu library as well. Vudu’s selection of Atmos-supported content is still limited, but it’s better than nothing. Now that Ultraviolet is no more, this is one of the few ways to maintain your digital copy library.

Which playback devices support Atmos?

We’ve got a more thorough breakdown in our Dolby Atmos explainer, but for specific lists of supported devices, head here and scroll down until you see an array of colored boxes with the header Enjoy Dolby Atmos on These Products. Atmos is supported on a wide range of devices, including TVs, smartphones, streaming boxes, and Blu-ray players, but keep in mind that you’ll need an Atmos-capable sound system to hear the results. Not sure if you’ve got the right gear? Here’s how to know if you’ve got great Dolby Atmos sound.
