Every superhero needs a trusty sidekick, and it looks like Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) just got one.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Benedict Wong — who shined as the chronically overworked director of a jet propulsion laboratory in Ridley Scott’s The Martian — has been cast as Strange’s loyal assistant.

To coin a metaphysical term, this casting choice feels like a synchronicity for a few different reasons. First: Benedict Wong shares a last name with the character he’ll be playing. Second: He shares a first name with his co-star. Third: He just so happens to be an excellent actor.

The character he’ll be playing is a recurring figure in the Marvel universe with an interesting resume of talents. He is knowledgeable in the occult as well as the martial arts but is also a faithful servant who keeps the Sorcerer Supreme’s affairs in perfect order. Wong’s most important function, however, is to keep a watchful eye on Strange’s body while his spirit is off visiting alternate dimensions.

Known for his roles in Prometheus, Moon, and Sunshine, Wong is currently playing the part of Kublai Khan in the Netflix original series Marco Polo.

When he arrives on set, Wong will join a talented and diverse cast that includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Tilda Swinton, Michael Stuhlbarg, Mads Mikkelsen, and of course, Benedict Cumberbatch. These days, the presence of the Sherlock star alone is enough to intrigue us, but there’s more than one name on that list capable of moving the proverbial needle.

If you’re looking for a mind-bending, metaphysically stimulating trip to the movies, this one should be right up your alley. Doctor Strange is filming now and is set to hit theaters on November 4, 2016.

The scariest MCU characters ranked
Elizabeth Olsen as the Scarlet Witch looking to the distance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

The MCU is famous for its lighthearted and kid-friendly vibe. Most of its films are notorious for their abundance of jokes and low stakes, amounting to colorful and visually dazzling but unimpactful stories. The heroes are all clean-cut and safe, paragons of correctness and physical beauty. Meanwhile, most of the villains in the MCU are somewhat forgettable, posing only a fleeting challenge to Earth's Mightiest Heroes and acting more like nuisances than genuinely dangerous threats. All in all, there seems to be no room for weird or unconventional in the MCU, much less scary.

Still, some MCU figures have enough creepy qualities to come across as scary. These characters are chilling, whether because of their eerie behavior, imposing physical appearance, wealth and influence, or a mix of all these. And while they might not send anyone running for the hills, they successfully unsettle audiences, especially considering the colorful and low-stakes universe they call home.

Over a decade in, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is still going strong. Its projects might not be as universally beloved as they once were, but there's no denying that they remain hugely influential. Fans still run to theaters to watch them, and critics still enjoy dissecting them and analyzing their effect on modern cinema. Through highs and lows, the MCU has given us some of the best superhero movies of all time, cementing many classic heroes as pop culture icons and elevating some D-list characters into the big leagues.

Still, if there's one aspect where the MCU is more divisive, it's in the villain department. Most MCU antagonists go from forgettable to just OK, barely scratching the surface of villain greatness. Of course, there are some exceptions, and several MCU baddies have elevated the material, going past the films' limitations and becoming legends in the process. After 29 films and almost as many villains, here's a definitive ranking of which villains reign at the top of the mountain of evil and which can barely call themselves bad guys.

At this point, just about everyone is familiar with the entertainment juggernaut that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has become. The premiere of a new MCU movie is now a global event, with a long list of box-office records metaphorically incinerated by the ticket-buying crowds that turn out for each installment of the biggest film franchise in Hollywood's history.

But here's the secret that all of those breathless headlines about Marvel movies are hiding: The best storytelling within the MCU is actually happening on a much smaller screen.
