Apple Maps might finally get the one Google feature everyone has been waiting for

Apple Maps has come a long way since its introduction, which was met with much criticism. Despite its steady progress, however, it still lacks one very important feature that Google Maps has: Street View. That could change very soon though.

Street View is a feature that Google Maps users have enjoyed for a long time. It gives you an interactive view of just about any location, and is perfect for helping you familiarize yourself with your destination or with particular intersections along your route. Google can offer this feature because it deploys a battalion of vehicles around the world with car-mounted cameras.

According to hints on Apple’s website, the Cupertino company could finally be readying it’s own version of Street View. Business Insider discovered this statement regarding privacy on the Apple Maps vehicles information page: “We are committed to protecting your privacy while collecting this data. For example, we will blur faces and license plates on collected images prior to publication. If you have comments or questions about this process, please contact us.”

Google does the same exact thing with Street View, so the belief is that this statement could be referring to a similar feature for Apple Maps.

The same webpage also reveals a schedule for Apple Maps vehicles. They have already been scheduled to hit England, France, and many areas of the United States beginning on January 4, and extending through February 14.

Apple Maps is now the most popular navigation app on iOS even though many people feel Google Maps is more powerful. However, let’s not forget that Apple Maps comes pre-installed on iPhones and iPads. While Google Maps is available on iOS, many users stick with whatever the default app is.

Even though Apple has until now neglected to add Street View, it has invested heavily in its Flyover feature. Flyover allows you to explore major cities and landmarks with 3D aerial views. Google offers something very similar in its Earth View mode in Google Maps. Apple added new Flyover locations, including Aomori, Japan; Bruges, Belgium; Lake Powell, Utah; and Limoges, France last week.

If Apple is actually working on Street View capabilities for its Maps app, we could hear more about it at the next Worldwide Developer’s Conference (WWDC). That event hasn’t been scheduled yet, but it typically takes place in June.

Samsung’s One UI 7 update might steal this Apple Intelligence feature
Samsung One UI 6 Quick Settings on Galaxy A34 held in hand.

The mobile phone world is on the brink of an AI arms race. Between Apple Intelligence making its debut on the iPhone 16, the impending release of Samsung's One UI 7 beta, and the latest Pixels coming with Google's AI, all the major players are getting ready to utilize one of the most transformative technologies of our lifetime. Now, we have news that Samsung plans to make off like a bandit with one of Apple Intelligence's core features: notification summaries.

The tip comes from leaker Chun Bhai on X. Bhai says the feature is called AI notification and can be found in the latest One UI 7 build. The feature is currently being tested, but it's a safe enough assumption that it will appear in the final release version of One UI 7.

Gemini in Google Maps may be the best use of mobile AI yet
Google Maps on the Asus Zenfone 11 Ultra.

We scarcely need reminding that Google is putting AI into everything, but its latest push is probably one of the most interesting and immediately helpful yet, as Google Maps has now entered its Gemini era.
Vast experience
Before going into the many AI updates happening across all of Google’s “Geo” (the collective name for all its mapping tools) departments, it’s helpful to understand just how rich Google’s location data already is. Collected over the last 20 years, Google’s mapping expertise is available in more than 250 countries and territories across the world, and Google Maps alone has more than 2 billion active users each month.

Google already uses AI in its mapping products, such as the Lens overlay in Maps’ AR mode, which puts live place information in front of you on the map. Google is now using AI to improve the photo-realistic 3D tour in Immersive View, a feature first launched last year, with live data on the location, including weather, parking, and turn-by-turn information. Immersive View is now set to launch in 150 cities this week and will include university campuses, too.

Apple Intelligence features are finally available for everyone
Apple Intelligence & Siri screen on an iPhone 16 Pro

Apple has begun rolling out Apple Intelligence to those with eligible iPhones through the latest iOS 18.1 update. Apple Intelligence was originally shown off during WWDC 2024 in June and has been available to those on the developer and public betas. However, as of today, iOS 18.1 is available to everyone, though Apple Intelligence is only available for the iPhone 15 Pro models and the entire iPhone 16 lineup.

With iOS 18.1, those users can now access several Apple Intelligence features, including Writing Tools, a more natural and capable Siri, summarize notifications, a smarter Photos app, and priority messages in Mail. Be aware that these are just a fraction of Apple Intelligence features — there are even more AI tools coming in iOS 18.2, which is currently in beta.
