Thor dons nerd glasses in new pics from Paul Fieg's Ghostbusters reboot

The new all-lady Ghostbusters are inching closer to the silver screen, and the marketing machine for Paul Fieg’s reboot of the classic franchise is in full effect. Today, we got a closer look at all of the lead characters thanks to a new official website, including a much-hyped shot of a “nerdy” Chris Hemsworth as the spirit squelchers’ receptionist, known simply as Kevin.

Given the fact that Hemsworth’s most famous role is that of the Norse god of thunder, the heartthrob’s decision to play what appears to be a dorky sidekick to the powerful female crew is getting a lot of attention, helping to build even more momentum for the new film.

And while it may seem a bit out of character for Thor himself to be pencil pushing in wide-frame glasses (and a pink sleeveless button down, no less), the casting seems all the more brilliant now that we’ve gotten a good look at him. Hemsworth is no stranger to comedy, after all, as anyone who’s seen the rocky reboot of the Vacation franchise (lead by Ed Helms) can attest. And his out-of-character role seems like it will add yet another element of humor to the already hilarious crew.

Of course, Hemsworth’s quirky role isn’t the only shot unveiled today, courtesy of the film’s website. Also on display are the previously-released posters in all their stylized glory, as well as candid shots of each of the four female lead characters.

The four leads include Kristin Wigg, as particle physicist Erin Gilbert; Kate McKinnon, as nuclear engineer and munitions expert Jillian Holtzmann (though the official site has her listed as “Hotlzmann” at present); Leslie Jones, as ghost tracker and municipal historian Patty Tolan; and Melissa McCarthy, as paranormal researcher Abby Yates.

The new film will also leverage some star-studded actors from the original film, including Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd, and Ernie Hudson, who will (presumably) reprise their roles as Dr. Peter Venkman, Dr. Raymond Stantz, and Winston Zeddemore, respectively.

Director Paul Fieg also teased on his Twitter account that a trailer will come out around the end of February.

Ghostbusters hits theaters July 16.

James Gunn refutes claim that certain characters are too niche for the DC Universe
James Gunn wears glasses and looks to the camera in DC Studios video.

Momentum has been slowly building for well over a year now for James Gunn and Peter Safran's new DC Universe. The multimedia, DC Comics-inspired franchise hasn't officially begun, though. That long-awaited moment will come when the new Gunn-created animated Suicide Squad spinoff TV series, Creature Commandos, premieres December 5 on Max. Nonetheless, Gunn is already not only receiving criticisms from some comic book readers and superhero fans but also pushing back against certain claims.

The DC Studios co-CEO did that very thing when one fan recently argued on Threads that Gunn's decision to greenlight projects about "niche" characters like Sgt. Rock and Swamp Thing makes it seem like he's only "making the DCU for hardcore comic book readers and not for the general audience." In response, Gunn wrote, "Don’t put Swamp Thing in the corner. That’s a project in development we’ve actually announced, and he’s an incredibly well-known character with not only some of the greatest comics of all time but [also] a successful film series and his own TV show, something that could be said of only a very small handful of DC characters."
