A crossover between The CW’s Flash series and Supergirl on CBS has been speculated about in the past, but was generally dismissed as fandom-fueled rumor. However, the television superhero team-up is a rumor no longer, with CBS confirming plans to bring Flash star Grant Gustin and his speedy alter ego into the world of Supergirl for a special event.

The executive producers of both series confirmed plans for the crossover this week, and thanked fans (and journalists) for keeping up the call to bring the two DC Comics heroes together.

Set to occur on the March 28 episode of Supergirl, the crossover will bring Gustin’s scarlet speedster to National City, the home turf of Melissa Benoist’s high-flying hero, the cousin of Superman. The announcement didn’t reveal any details about the plot of the episode, but with the current season of The Flash opening the door to travel between parallel versions of Earth, there’s already a plot device in place to facilitate a meet-up between the characters.

“We are so incredibly excited to announce something that we have dreamed of happening since we starting making Supergirl — The Flash and Supergirl are teaming up!” said The Flash and Supergirl  executive producers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg in a statement announcing the crossover. “We want to thank Grant Gustin for making the time to come visit (on top of his already immense workload) and all of the folks at CBS, The CW, Warner Bros. and DC for working this out. And finally thanks to the fans and journalists who have kept asking for this to happen. It is our pleasure and hope to create an episode worthy of everyone’s enthusiasm and support.”

While the notion of a crossover was initially dismissed as impossible due to the characters’ presence on different networks, some precedent was set during the current season of Arrow when Matt Ryan reprised his role as John Constantine from NBC’s canceled Constantine series for a multi-episode arc of The CW’s hit superhero series (which also frequently crosses over with The Flash).

Along with Benoist as the title character, Supergirl features Mehcad Brooks as James Olsen, Laura Benanti as Alura Zor-El, Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant, Chyler Leigh as Alexandra Danvers, Jenna Dewan Tatum as Lucy Lane, David Harewood as Hank Henshaw, and Peter Facinelli as Maxwell Lord. Lois and Clark star Dean Cain and original Supergirl movie star Helen Slater also play roles in the series.

Supergirl airs every Monday at 8 pm ET on CBS.
