In Far Cry Primal, it’s ‘kill or be killed’

Far Cry Primal might not have the sniper rifles, rocket launchers, and flamethrowers of the previous games, but there are still plenty of ways to defend yourself in Ubisoft’s take on the Stone Age. A new trailer shows just exactly protagonist what Takkar can use to fight both the humans and the beasts that want him dead.

“Takkar and his people are at the very bottom of the food chain, threatened by man and beast alike,” the narrator says. “To overcome his many foes, Takkar has powerful weaponry at his disposal.”

Glimpses of the clubs and spears Takkar can use have been shown in past gameplay demonstrations and trailers, but it’s the bow that’s the star of the show this time around. An upgrade allows for you to fire two arrows from the bow at once in a similar fashion to Rise of the Tomb Raider. And like the berserk darts found in several of the Assassin’s Creed games, “berserker bombs” cause enemies to fight each other. It’s not clear, however, if the latter is limited to only human enemies, or if it can be used to cause packs of animals to launch into a civil war.

Primal is putting considerable emphasis on Takkar’s “Beast Master” abilities, which allow him to tame animals to do his bidding, and the developers couldn’t resist putting the most annoying animal from Far Cry 4 in the game: the badger. The fearless creature is shown scaring away a bear in the trailer. If badgers can actually do that, I never want to go outside again. And that’s during the day — the world of Far Cry Primal will be even more dangerous at night, when beasts roam the landscape looking for fresh meat.

Far Cry Primal will do everything in its power to kill you on February 23, provided you have an Xbox One or PlayStation 4. If you have a PC, you’ll have to wait until March 1.

Ubisoft delays its Rainbow Six, The Division mobile titles … again

Ubisoft's mobile titles are getting even more delays. In its Q1 financial report released Thursday, the company announced that Rainbow Six Mobile and The Division Resurgence have been delayed out of fiscal year 2025, meaning they're now set for at least later next year. The company says this is to "ensure that these experiences deliver on expectations with optimized KPIs in the context of a demanding yet very large market."

Both mobile titles, which Ubisoft says are full versions of their respective games but built from the ground up for touchscreens, have been delayed multiple times. Rainbow Six Mobile was announced in 2022, and was expected to release later that year after a closed beta. The year came and went. The team updated players in March that it would be pausing the open beta soft launch rollout to "focus our efforts on enhancing key elements based on community feedback."

Star Wars Outlaws might be a little too close to Uncharted for its own good
Kay shoots stormtroopers in Star Wars Outlaws.

The Star Wars video game universe is expanding once again. Set to release on August 30, Star Wars Outlaws is Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment's take on a new type of Star Wars game. It's a traditional Ubisoft open-world game with shades of Uncharted layered in between its sci-fi action. More crucially, it's telling a fully unique story in the Star Wars universe. It's clear where its inspirations draw from for better, and certainly, for worse.

Set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, Outlaws follows main protagonist Kay Vess, an outlaw scoundrel embarking on a series of quests to make it in this cutthroat galaxy. It's a strong concept, letting players live out their lives as more of a Han Solo figure instead of a Jedi. But after a recent hands-on demo with Outlaws, I'm not sure that the potential is paying off just yet.
Not-so-uncharted territory
Clearly drawing inspiration from the Uncharted video game series with its climbing, gunplay, and quippy characters, Outlaws feels a bit like a relic of the past. Granted, it's hard to get a sense of a game like this in one sitting. This could just be a difficult game to show a small vertical slice of when the bigger picture could be more interesting. However, the three sections I played left me wanting more.
