The groceries go ‘R’-rated in first trailer for Seth Rogen’s Sausage Party

Raunchy comedies have experienced something of a renaissance lately, with audiences flocking to see films like Trainwreck and

Deadpool in theaters, helping both films set new records for “R”-rated movies along the way. With the latter film breaking the mold for superhero movies, Seth Rogen’s upcoming film Sausage Party looks to do the same for digitally animated features with a story about groceries that learn the terrifying truth about what happens when someone takes them home from the market.

Sony Pictures released the first, red-band trailer for Sausage Party this week (shown below, and of course, it’s Not Safe For Work), and the brief preview suggests that the film will certainly live up to its restricted-audience rating.

Co-directed by Conrad Vernon (Shrek 2) and Greg Tiernan (Thomas & Friends), Sausage Party features an impressive voice cast that includes co-writer and producer Rogen, as well Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill, Bill Hader, Michael Cera, James Franco, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Paul Rudd, Nick Kroll, David Krumholtz, Edward Norton, and Salma Hayek. The film is based on a script penned by Rogen, Hill, and Rogen’s frequent collaborator, Evan Goldberg.

Sausage Party casts Rogen as a lone sausage who leads a group of groceries on a mission to save themselves from the person who took them from the store, and then inform their fellow supermarket products of the dire fate that awaits them when they leave the shelves.

An early version of the film debuted Monday at the South by Southwest Film Festival, offering the first look at the first “R”-rated, computer-animated comedy to come from the team responsible for SuperbadNeighbors, and various other recent, raunchy comedies. The film is also the first “R”-rated computer-animated feature to have a theatrical release since 1999’s South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut.

Sausage Party is scheduled to hit theaters August 12.

The sequel to the Oscar-winning Gladiator, Gladiator II stars Paul Mescal as Lucius, the former heir to the throne and son of Maximus (Russell Crowe) and Lucilla (Connie Nielsen). After Roman forces kill his wife and force him into slavery, Lucius trains to be a gladiator and sets his sights on exacting his vengeance against the Empire.

Gladiator II will definitely be an awesome theatrical experience. After seeing Gladiator II, why not revisit more projects in Scott's filmography?
