Action cameras have become the rage in recent years, but the emergence of live video streaming means that you’ll want something that has the ability to connect to a mobile network. LG has you covered with the Action Cam LTE.

It’s very similar to a GoPro, but it has LTE connectivity. This means that you can stream directly to YouTube Live so all your friends can watch the action as it happens. It also has two more features GoPro lacks: GPS and motion sensing.

As with all action cameras, durability is important. The Action Cam LTE has a rating of IP67, which means it’s completely protected from dust and sand. Plus, it can survive in water up to a meter deep for 30 minutes without a hitch. For those of you that are a little more hardcore, LG plans to offer a waterproof case during the third quarter that will allow you to go surfing or scuba diving.

When the action is over and you’re back home relaxing, you can set up the Action Cam as a CCTV camera, since it has remote access via 3G and LTE.

Users can also download recorded images and videos with a paired smartphone. Unfortunately LG didn’t specify if pairing works on both Android and iOS, but we presume it does.

The camera has a 1/2.3-inch lens capable of capturing 12.3-megapixel photos. It can record 4K videos at 30 frames per second (fps), 1080p at 60fps, or 720p at 120fps. The live streaming feature works for only 720p at 30fps.

At only 35mm x 35mm x 77.9mm and weighing only 95 grams, it’s compact enough to take anywhere.

The Action Cam includes 2GB of RAM along with 4GB of internal storage. You can also add a MicroSD card with up to 2TB for extra storage.

Connectivity includes LTE, 3G, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, and Bluetooth 4.1. It also has a USB Type-C 2.0 port.

Battery life is always a concern, but not with the Action Cam LTE. The included 1,400mAh battery means you’ll be able to capture up to four hours of 1080p video before running out of juice.

And finally, LG will offer an optional mount at launch. It can be attached to helmets, bicycles, cars, and other fast moving objects.

The LG Action Cam LTE launches in South Korea in June followed by key markets such as North America and Europe thereafter. No pricing was specified for either the camera itself or the optional mount.

Why I fell in love with action cameras in 2022, and what I think comes next
The DJI Action 2, Action 3, GoPro Hero 10 and 11, and the Insta360 One RS.

It wasn't that long ago that GoPro ruled the action camera roost, with many other companies trying to grab a piece of that pie. The likes of Yi, and even Sony, built some highly compelling cameras. But Yi has fallen back to manufacturing home security cameras, and while Sony still makes an action camera, it hasn’t been updated in several years.

However, times have changed and new challengers have stepped up. Over the past few years, competition has heated up, with both Insta360 and DJI going head-to-head with GoPro. It's resulted in 2022 quietly becoming the year of action cameras, and it's been a total blast.

The DJI Osmo Action 3 looks nothing like the Action 2
The DJI Osmo Action 3 in a rocky stream.

After its audaciously different and innovative Action 2 camera, DJI is returning to the roots of its action camera lineup with the Osmo Action 3. It now closely resembles the original DJI Osmo Action, including the reintroduction of the Osmo branding into its name. However, it has clearly learned a lot from the Action 2, so the camera offers some unique talents that could give it an edge over the fierce competition it faces.

The key feature that helps the Action 3 stand out from the crowd is its magnetic mounting system. This was pioneered in the Action 2, and has been refined in the Action 3 to eliminate loose connections and better withstand impacts. However, unlike the Action 2, the Action 3 no longer transmits power and data through this connection.

GoPro Hero 11 Black leak suggests a moderate upgrade
How GoPro's yet-to-be-announced Hero 11 Black action camera could look.

GoPro is expected to unveil the latest iteration of its popular action camera this month.

Reports from German technology site WinFuture  suggest that while the physical design of the Hero 11 Black may be similar to its predecessor -- including a 1.4-inch front display on the front and a 2.27-inch touchscreen display on the back -- the new camera will sport a wider lens capable of 27-megapixel stills, up from the 23 megapixels that come with the current device.
