Comic-Con New York got some very bad news last week, as it learned that 2016 would mark the final appearance of comics industry legend Stan Lee. But today, Comic-Con San Diego got some very good news about its 2016 show.

According to ScreenCrush, Star Trek Beyond will open the convention as it hosts its world premiere on Wednesday, July 20. The film will be shown at the Embarcadero Marina Park South and will be displayed on a large-format, IMAX screen.

The premiere will mark the first time a film has debuted outdoors and in IMAX, and those lucky enough to catch it will get to enjoy a beautiful night (it’s always beautiful in San Diego) by the ocean as they check out one of the most anticipated films of 2016.

What’s more, the San Diego Symphony Orchestra will perform the Michael Giacchino-composed score live alongside the film. Said director Justin Lin, “I am thrilled to celebrate the premiere of the film together with the fans at Comic-Con and excited for everyone there to experience Michael Giacchino’s incredible score played live.”

Though the event will be part of Comic-Con, it is not exclusive to Comic-Con attendees, and those who attended the recent 50th anniversary fan event in Los Angeles have already received invites to the screening. If you’re looking to try to score a few tickets for yourself, be ready, as they are expected to be available soon.

For those of you who missed it, a new trailer for the film debuted over the weekend and seems to have been very well received by fans of the franchise. Can the movie itself live up to the hype? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Star Trek Beyond stars Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto, and Idris Elba. The film is set to hit theaters everywhere on July 22, 2016.

Without Marvel or big studios, San Diego Comic-Con 2023 still mattered
Mark as an Invincible flying above the cityscape.

The 2023 San Diego Comic-Con has come and gone until next year. For the better part of the week, Comic-Con devoured most of the non-Barbenheimer discourse in pop culture with exclusive previews, trailers, collectibles, and more comic books than you could ever read in a lifetime.

It can be an overwhelming experience for Comic-Con newcomers -- and even for veteran attendees who can remember when the show was held at a much smaller venue just a few decades ago. In the aftermath of this year's Comic-Con, we're taking a look at the six big takeaways from SDCC 2023.

How do you celebrate Star Trek at Comic-Con when all of the actors stayed home? The actors and writers strike has greatly diminished the star power of San Diego Comic-Con, but Paramount+ had a novel solution. The streamer put its cards on the table early by promoting the remaining episodes of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, including a video preview for the upcoming musical episode.

San Diego Comic-Con 2023 panel and event schedule
The cover to DC's Knight Terrors.

The pop culture event of 2023 is finally here! San Diego Comic-Con has been the biggest comic convention in the U.S. for decades, and a top destination for movie and TV stars for more than 20 years. This year's convention is going to be an exception that rule, since many of the actors, actresses, and writers will not be present due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes. But don't think for a moment that this means people won't show up for Comic-Con. The tickets were sold out months ago, and fans have plenty of other ways to get their Comic-Con on.

Before we dive into this year's panels, we want to give you some much-needed advice to handle the long days inside and outside of the San Diego Convention Center. The first piece of advice is simple: Bring your own food and water whenever possible. Otherwise, you'll find yourself waiting in line for an hour for overpriced convention food and bottled water that's several more expensive than it would be in a regular store. Having your own food means that you waste less time in line, and you save more money for things you can actually keep. And if you need more food while you're at the show, there's a Ralphs at 101 G Street, which is just under a half mile away from the convention center.
