Staying relevant in the automotive industry seems increasingly tied to the ride-sharing industry, and now, Volkswagen Group has become the latest to join the foray. On Tuesday, the German automobile company announced a $300 million strategic investment in Gett, the on-demand transportation service with a significant presence in Europe.

It’s a trendy move as of late, with General Motors announcing a similar investment in Lyft earlier this year, and Uber partnering with a major Chinese automaker back in 2015. According to Volkswagen, the decision comes “as part of its strategy to generate a substantial share of its future sales revenue from new business models focused on mobility services.”

While Gett has an office in New York, the black car service is most popular overseas, and is available in over 60 cities across the globe. In London, the service has seen particular success, with over half of all black cabs operated by the transportation startup.

“We are thrilled to partner with the Volkswagen Group, the No. 1 global car manufacturer,” said Gett founder and CEO Shahar Waiser in a statement. “With VW’s investment, Gett will now accelerate its expansion to the rest of Europe, and strengthen its position in NYC, where we already operate.”

For its part, Volkswagen has clearly taken note of the need to expand its market, and in particular, the opportunity made available by on-demand mobility.

“Alongside our pioneering role in the automotive business, we aim to become a world leading mobility provider by 2025,” said Matthias Müller, chairman of the board of management of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft. “Within the framework of our future Strategy 2025, the partnership with Gett marks the first milestone for the Volkswagen Group on the road to providing integrated mobility solutions that spotlight our customers and their mobility needs.”

Gett certainly isn’t staying in its original lane either, taking a page out of Uber’s book and adding delivery services for things like pizza and champagne. And in London, you can also use Gett to make deliveries of your own.

“The Volkswagen Group and Gett is a great strategic partnership,” Waiser concluded. “The pay-per-ride domain is growing rapidly. In that context, Gett provides VW with the technology to expand beyond car ownership to on-demand mobility for consumers and businesses.”

Messenger’s encrypted chats pick up user-friendly features

Facebook Messenger's end-to-end encrypted mode, Secret Conversations, is getting a substantial update today. The company is including several new features that would make the mode attractive to use and bring it on par with regular messages, including typing indicators in chats, reactions, and GIF support.

Secret Conversations debuted a few years ago on Messenger, but it was fairly bare-bones, offering just one-on-one messaging support. The feature picked up support for end-to-end encrypted group chats and calls in summer 2021, and today's update enables almost everything you want from the regular Messenger app. This includes emoji reactions, typing indicators, GIFs and stickers, forwarding, and the ability to directly reply to messages. There are also media-related features that include the ability to save media and edit video or photos before sending. Messenger will also let you know when someone screenshots your conversation. Secret Conversations are meant to be secret after all, but no amount of encryption thwarts a simple PNG screenshot by the other party.

Check out these cool Earth images taken from higher up than the ISS
Earth as seen from the Crew Dragon during the Inspiration4 mission.

We’re so often impressed by the amazing images of Earth captured by astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS), but the latest photos to come to our attention were taken from an even higher orbit and therefore show our planet from a slightly different -- and perhaps more beautiful -- perspective.

The pictures were captured during the world’s first all-civilian space mission operated by SpaceX earlier this month.

Inside the lab teaching Volkswagen’s born-again Bus how to drive itself
volkswagen unveils argo ai powered id buzz ad electric van

Previewed by the heritage-laced ID.Buzz concept, Volkswagen's born-again Bus will arrive in 2022 with a few cool tech tricks up its sleeve. It will be fully electric, it will ride on the MEB architecture already found under the EVs like the ID.3 and the ID.4, and it will spawn an autonomous shuttle scheduled to start carrying passengers in 2025. Argo A.I. is helping Volkswagen teach the Bus how to drive itself, and Digital Trends got an inside look at the project.

Volkswagen unveiled the first ID.Buzz-based prototype on the sidelines of the 2021 Munich auto show. Fully draped in camouflage to mask its final design, the van is fitted with an armada of sensors, radars, cameras, microphones, and lidars that paint a digital picture of the world around it. Argo A.I. — which Volkswagen and Ford jointly own a stake in — argues its technology is highly advanced: its lidar can detect and avoid potholes by scanning the road surface, and it can see objects that are about 1,300 feet away, even if they're dark (like a black car). Powering this hardware requires tremendous computing power, several backup systems, and a mammoth amount of data.
