Bill Hader’s lengthy comedy résumé is about to get even longer. HBO has given a series pickup to Barry, a new comedy in which he’ll star as well as co-write, according THR. On top of that, Hader serves as the pilot’s executive producer and director.

The series centers on Barry, an unhappy hitman who lives in the Midwest. When he takes an assignment in Los Angeles, though, he ends up finding his place in the city’s theater scene. The contrast between his dark job and the bright-eyed acting hopefuls should be amusing, and Hader’s comedic chops will only add to the entertainment value.

The comedian will share the screen with a sizable group of other actors. His co-stars include Henry Winkler, Stephen Root, Sarah Goldberg, Anthony Carrigan, and Glenn Fleshler. He also teams up with Alec Berg (Silicon Valley) on the script.

Hader reached an overall deal with HBO back in 2014, and Barry comes as part of it. The pickup comes shortly after Casey Bloys took over as HBO’s new president of programming. He was promoted at the end of May after the departure of Michael Lombardo. As the previous head of comedy, Bloys is obviously familiar with the genre.

The network has other pilots involving high-profile comedians in the pipeline as well. Among them are Sarah Silverman’s The Gorburger Show and Lena Duham’s Max. With shows like The Brink and Togetherness done, HBO needs comedies to replace them. So far, in addition to Barry, viewers can expect Sarah Jessica Parker’s Divorce, Issa Rae’s Insecure, and Pete Holmes and Judd Apatow’s Crashing, among others.

HBO has done well with a number of comedies in recent years, including Dunham’s Girls, the critically acclaimed Veep, and the immensely popular Ballers, starring Dwayne Johnson. Barry has a lot to live up to, but with Hader involved, it looks like one to bet on.

A killer is revealed in the season 3 teaser of HBO’s Barry
Bill Hader in Barry.

All Barry Berkman really wants out of life is a chance to escape his violent past so that he can pursue his new passion for acting. Is that too much to ask? In HBO's Barry, the answer to that question is apparently "yes." After all, his life as a hitman has always been his greatest moral failing. And now, Barry's mentor, Gene Cousineau, knows exactly what kind of man he truly is.

In the first trailer for Barry season 3, we see a flashback to one of season 2's most pivotal moments. Barry's former ally, Monroe Fuches, exposed Barry's crime to Gene. Barry killed Detective Janice Moss when she got too close to the truth. She also happened to be intimate with Gene. And now that Gene is aware of the truth, he's absolutely terrified of Barry.

Bill Hader in Barry.

It's been almost three years since the season two finale of Barry premiered on HBO. Thankfully, the long wait for new episodes is almost over. HBO has announced that Barry season 3 will premiere on Sunday, April 24. And it will once again find Bill Hader's Barry Berkman trying to escape his life of violence in favor of his current passion for acting.

Hader co-created the series in 2018 alongside Alec Berg. In the show, Barry is a contract killer who unexpectedly found himself drawn to acting while on a mission to assassinate a target. Barry also found a mentor in his acting coach, Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler), and a place in Gene's class alongside other would-be actors. Unfortunately for Barry, the violence of his past keeps intruding on his new life regardless of his desires.

The Batman’s Colin Farrell to star in HBO Max’s new Penguin series
Colin Farrell in The Penguin.

The Batman will hit theaters in just a few months, but HBO Max already has plans to expand this new vision of Gotham City. Variety is reporting that Colin Farrell has signed on to reprise his role as Oswald Cobblepot in HBO Max's Penguin spinoff series. Reports about The Batman's latest spinoff first emerged in September, but Farrell wasn't attached to the project at that time.

Writer Bill Finger and artist Bob Kane created Penguin in 1941, and he has become one of Batman's most enduring adversaries. Despite his grotesque appearance, Penguin tends to spend time among Gotham City's high-society members, while also using his assortment of trick umbrellas to commit crimes. In the first Batman live-action TV series from 1966-68, Penguin was played by Burgess Meredith, while Danny DeVito took over the role in 1992's Batman Returns. Robin Lord Taylor portrayed a younger Oswald Cobblepot in Fox's 2014 Gotham series.
