Push, pull or drag it in: Verizon accepts AT&T iPhone trade-ins

trade inVerizon will reportedly offer customers the option of trading in their AT&T iPhones for credit toward the upcoming Verizon iPhone. According to MacRumors, Verizon sent out an email indicating that current AT&T users could grab a Verizon iPhone 4 by handing over their models. Here’s what AT&T iPhones can get you when Verizon opens its doors to Apple in February:

  • iPhone 2G, 16GB – $60 (towards Verizon iPhone 4)
  • iPhone 3G, 16GB – $105
  • iPhone 3GS, 32 GB – $160
  • iPhone 4, 16GB – $280
  • iPhone 4, 32GB – $360

For anyone planning on ditching AT&T in favor of Verizon anyway, this could make the process a little easier, versus attempting to sell the iPhone yourself. MacRumors thought it was possible the offer was available only to corporate customers, but a Verizon spokesperson told CNET that trade-in options aren’t exclusive. Credit comes in the form of a gift card and can only go toward purchasing an iPhone at full retail price, or toward a future wireless bill. So you won’t necessarily save that much money if you’re trading in your AT&T iPhone for a Verizon version, but you will be able to ditch your previous device easily. That is, only if you aren’t tempted by the promise of Apple bringing back its formerly expelled unlimited data plan.

I’m obsessed with this app that turned my iPhone into a retro iPod
The My Classic app on an iPhone 16 showing the iPod interface.

As great as modern technology is, sometimes it can be a bit overwhelming. Smartphones today are capable of virtually endless tasks and are light-years better than mobile gadgets from a decade or two ago. Still, it's hard not to have some nostalgia for "retro" devices like the Palm Pilot, the first Motorola Razr, or your trusty old iPod.

While doomscrolling X the other night, I saw that Quinn Nelson of Snazzy Labs had posted a short video about an iPhone app called "My Classic - Retro Console" that promises to turn your iPhone into an iPod Classic. It's a very silly idea, but at a one-time price of $3, it was cheap enough that I decided to try it for myself. After living with my iPhone 16 transformed into an old-school iPod for about a day, I'm absolutely obsessed with it.

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has forced a lot of companies to change their practices in order to comply with these guidelines. While the GDPR is a European-focused set of rules, consumers all over the world have seen beneficial side effects. One of those is that Apple has opened up its NFC technology to third parties, resulting in the first-ever alternative to Apple Pay on the iPhone.

Vipps is a Norwegian-based firm and the first company to have a tap-to-pay solution on the iPhone besides Apple itself. For now, the service only supports Norwegian banks, but it's expected to grow in time and spread to other payment providers across Europe.
