Super-Sedans

So you want a true family car, one with actual leg-room in the back seats, but you still like to make out to track days every now and then. BMW, Lexus, and Mercedes-Benz have each created what could be called a super-sedan. Each of these cars starts in the mid-fifty thousand dollar price range, comes with a custom-built V8 producing over 400 HP, and can get to 60 MPH in about 4.5 seconds. All three cars qualify as a comfortable and stylish daily driver – they are refined with all of the standard luxuries you would expect from BMW, Mercedes, or Lexus. All in all you are not sacrificing any comfort by choosing one of these as a daily driver, and when it comes to track day they will still perform with the best.

Mercedes-Benz G580 first drive: old-school off-roader goes electric

American car buyers mostly know Mercedes-Benz as a luxury brand. But for decades, the automaker has also produced the tough, rugged G-Class (also known as the Geländewagen or G-Wagen), an SUV not afraid to get its leather upholstery muddy. And now, this iconic Mercedes is going electric.

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology — the final name of the SUV previously known as the EQG — isn’t the first electric off-roader. The Rivian R1S and R1T and GMC Hummer EV have proven that electric powertrains and off-roading are a great combination. But the electric G-Wagen is different because it’s based on an internal-combustion model — and a very traditional one at that.

Mercedes-Benz G580 vs Rivian R1S: rugged electric SUVs, compared

Mercedes-Benz has finally unveiled the long-rumored and heavily teased electric G-Wagon. The new vehicle, officiallydubbed the "G580 with EQ Technology," retains the beloved design of the G-Wagon, but with an interior refresh and, more importantly, an all-electric powertrain. But the vehicle goes up against tough competition -- especially in the rugged electric SUV space. Perhaps the most-loved electric SUV so far is the Rivian R1S, a three-row SUV from a new startup that, for many, is the go-to option above a certain price range.

The G-Wagon is going electric, in the form of the new fully electric "Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology." Yep, the name is a mouthful -- taking the name from the concept version of this car, the Concept EQG, might have been a better move. Bu, regardless, the vehicle is sure to appeal to those who want a G-Wagon while getting all the benefits of an EV.

Design
The G580 retains many of the design aspects of the G-Class you already know and love, and while the concept iteration had some modern touches, like light bars on the exterior of the car, the real-world version looks pretty similar to the non-electric G-Wagon, though that's not to say there aren't any design changes whatsoever.
