Amex Digital Offers Blu-Ray for MacBooks

Amex Digital Offers Blu-Ray for MacBooks

At Apple’s introduction of new MacBook models earlier this week, Apple CEO Steve Jobs characterized Blu-ray technology as a "bag of hurt" from the perspective of a manufacturer because the licensing is "so complex." Although we can’t help but note that Apple has backed Blu-ray from very early days and other computer makers don’t seem to be having oodles of trouble working out the licensing issues, Amex Digital is hoping to capitalize on demand for Blu-ray devices while Apple waits for things to "settle down." Amex Digital’s new Portable Blu-ray Super Multi Drive for MacBook lets users tap into BD single and double-layer media, as well as write DVD±RW discs at 4-8× speeds.

Amex Digital is offering two versions of the drive: the BDP-2 Blu-ray player for $289, and the BDR-2 Blu-ray recorder for $389. The drive can be powered off either a USB 2.0 bus or via a separate 5V DC adapter, and offers a slim 140 by 143 by 16 mm profile that should appeal to portable users. In fact, the drive’s footprint is identical to Amex Digital’s portable DVD burner introduced in July, which bore a striking resemblance to the external DVD burner Apple offered for use with the original MacBook Air.

Although the product is being aimed specifically at MacBook users, Amex Digital is happy to note the drive works with Windows XP and Vista. The drive ships with a USB cable and a user’s guide CD-ROM.

Leaked M4 MacBook Pro benchmarks reveal incredible performance
MacBook Pro with M4

The M4 MacBook Pros launched this week with plenty to talk about. Performance, however, wasn't the focus of all the attention. Apple didn't provide many direct comparisons of how much more powerful the M4 MacBook Pro is over the previous generation of chips.

But now some leaked benchmarks for the M4 series have been put online, and they reveal just how significant of an uplift the M4 Max and M4 Pro bring. Over on X (formerly Twitter) user James Atkinson discovered some results from a Geekbench 6 benchmark for the M4 Max chip, which revealed 4,060 single-core and 26,675 multi-core scores.

Lenovo’s latest laptop had an edge on the MacBook Air until this week
Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Aura Edition front view showing display and keyboard.

There aren't many options in the 15-inch laptop category, which has given way to slightly smaller 14-inch laptops and larger 16-inch machines. But the MacBook Air 15 stands out as one of the best options you can buy today, as long as you don't need Windows.

The Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Aura Edition is a new alternative that runs Intel's latest Lunar Lake chipsets that are aimed primarily at efficiency -- aimed most directly at Apple's efficient M3 chipset. Can the Yoga Slim 7i compete? Perhaps before this week. But now that the MacBook Air 15-inch starts with 16GB of RAM, the Yoga Slim 7i's advantages are lessened.
