Apple’s new 13-inch MacBook Pro features Magic Keyboard

After months of rumors, Apple’s long-awaited refresh of the 13-inch MacBook Pro is now official.

As expected, the new MacBook Pro’s biggest upgrade lies in its keyboard. It swaps Apple’s flawed butterfly mechanism with a much more reliable scissor-switch keyboard that was first introduced on the latest 16-inch MacBook Pro last year. More importantly, this launch serves as the final nail in the 5-year-old butterfly keyboard mechanism’s coffin, as all of the company’s MacBook models now feature the new Magic Keyboard.

Visually, however, the MacBook Pro is identical to its predecessor. Several reports had hinted it may have a bigger 14-inch screen and smaller bezels but that’s not the case here, unfortunately. It comes equipped with the same 13-inch Retina and True Tone display, Touch ID for biometrics authentication, a strip of touchscreen perched above the keyboard, aluminum unibody design in space gray or silver, and an identical set of ports.

The rest of the new MacBook Pro’s upgrades are under the hood. Like the MacBook Air, the 2020 MacBook Pro is powered by Intel’s latest 10th-gen quad-core chipsets (on higher-end models) that compared to the previous MacBook Pro’s base variant offers “2.8 times faster performance.” The integrated Intel Iris GPU also supports the Pro Display XDR at full 6K resolution. In addition, Apple has doubled the base internal storage to 256G and for the first time on a 13-inch Mac, added a 32GB RAM option.

“Whether you’re a college student, a developer, or a creative pro, the 13-inch MacBook Pro delivers powerful performance, a stunning Retina display, and all-day battery life in our most portable pro notebook. Today we’re adding the new Magic Keyboard, doubling the standard storage, and boosting performance, making the 13-inch MacBook Pro an even better value for our customers,” wrote Tom Boger, Apple’s senior director of Mac and iPad product marketing, in a blog post.

The new MacBook Pro’s base model costs $1,299 ($1,199 for education customers) and comes with an outdated 8th-gen processor, 8GB RAM, and a 256GB SSD. However, you have the option to upgrade to 16GB RAM for $100, which is $200 less than what you would have to pay in prior models. It’s available starting today on Apple’s online store in the United States. It will begin shipping and “will be in select Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Resellers later this week.”

An all-glass MacBook? Here’s what Apple thinks it would look like
Bladur's Gate 3 being played on the M3 MacBook Air.

Patents and clues pointing to all-glass MacBooks and iMacs have been floating around since 2011, and this week, another patent has appeared on Patently Apple -- a "glass housing" for a MacBook-like device. It has a virtual keyboard and trackpad, and there's even a separate patent for "finger devices" that would decrease the strain of typing on a glass surface.

One of the most interesting things about the glass housing is that it "provides I/O functionality." This means, that instead of inserting a separate trackpad or keyboard keys into the housing for users to interact with, the housing itself would provide a method of input and output. In some areas and contexts, the surface would function simply as housing to protect internal components, and in others, it would display information and react to user input.

The M4 MacBook Pro is apparently listed for sale on Facebook — but I don’t buy it
An open MacBook Pro on a table.

According to analysts and industry experts like Mark Gurman and Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is expected to announce an M4 refresh of the MacBook Pro possibly this month and most likely before the end of the year. No event announcements have come yet, though Apple has historically held an October Mac event. But now, an online leak discovered by Wccftech claims the new model is up for sale on a private Facebook group. The claim is backed up by alleged images of the retail box, but there's plenty to be suspicious about.

While the images were posted by known leaker ShrimpApplePro, the information was sent to them from an unknown source. There are two posts so far, one with an image of the back of the retail box -- with comments from AppleShrimpPro saying to take it with asome skepticism -- and one showing additional images and claiming it's for sale on Facebook.

Apple finally has a chance to fix the Vision Pro. Here’s what it needs to do
A person wearing the Apple Vision Pro demo unit in an Apple Store.

If you’ve been following Apple’s Vision Pro in the year or so since it was launched, you’ll know we’ve seen an almost endless supply of reports claiming that the mixed reality headset is in trouble and selling poorly. If that’s the case, it’s clear that Apple needs to do something about it.

Yet, that might not be so easy. Remember when the Apple Watch first launched to a collective “meh” from the world? Even the original iPhone wasn’t a runaway success. But as Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman puts it in his latest Power On newsletter, these devices had solid foundations that just needed tweaking for them to become the great products they are today. The Vision Pro, he contends, needs a far more drastic overhaul.
