Apple shareholders vote down CEO succession plan

apple releaseAt a meeting devoid of CEO Steve Jobs today, Apple shareholders declined to draft a succession plan for its company in the wake of Jobs recent health issues. Earlier this month, some shareholders — namely, the Central Laborers’ Pension Fund — called for Apple to create a plan ensuring a “smooth transition” in the case of Jobs permanent removal as CEO.

While Apple will not be required to outline who would become its leader, according to the Wall Street Journal the company did pass a measure that gives its share owners increased power over appointing directors. Jobs has been on leave for over a month now, and the decision to strengthen the powers of Apple’s shareholders seems a natural one in the midst of his indefinite leave. Regardless, it’s an unpopular decision with Apple.

The newly adopted measure will give California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) more weight to throw around in the company. CalPERS, the largest pension fund in the country, proposed the plan and will become an increasingly influential part of Apple’s decision process when it comes to appointing new board members. Apple had taken a stand against both measures, claiming that releasing a succession plan gave its competitors classified information and that it had no desire to change the mechanics of the board’s operations.

Although that runs counter to some reports we heard earlier in the year -- one rumor said Apple would release its new MacBooks no later than September -- more reports are mounting that claim Apple is delaying its plans.

Apple-1 computer, sat on a table, with a person typing on its keyboard.

Anything Apple and old usually fetches a decent amount at auction, whether it’s one of the company’s first computers from the 1970s, an original iPhone still in its packaging, or even a pre-Apple job application by Steve Jobs, the man who co-founded and later transformed the tech company into one of the most successful businesses on the planet.

Speaking of Jobs, another artifact linked to him has just been auctioned at Boston-based RR Auction for $175,759 -- six times more than expected.

Apple CEO says he uses ChatGPT, weeks after Apple banned it
Tim Cook at WWDC 2022.

Apple had one of its largest WWDC keynotes in recent memory this year, with monumental announcements like the new Vision Pro headset. But one area where Apple was shockingly silent was AI, especially after the cascading rise of apps like ChatGPT.

Apple's CEO, Tim Cook, said the company is being patient with AI for now in an interview with Good Morning America. "I do think it's so important to be very deliberate and very thoughtful in the development and the deployment of [Large Language Models]," Cook said. "Because they can be so powerful that you worry about things like bias, things like misinformation, maybe worse in some cases."
