Brother Offers $150 Wi-Fi Laser Printer

Printer and peripheral maker Brother is no strange to kicking out affordable printing products and other peripherals for home and small business use, but every once in a while they offer a new product that brings home how once-expensive technology can suddenly become affordable. The company has announced its new HL-2170W WiFi-equipped monochrome laser printer—which in itself wouldn’t be too noteworthy, except for the fact the device carries a suggested retail price of $149.99.

“The demand for affordable personal laser printing for the home and home office remains strong,” said Brother senior product manager for laser printers Linda Sanford, in a statement. “By continuing to offer printers with popular features including small footprints, fast print speeds, and built-in networking capabilities, our products are ideally positioned to satisfy those customers’ demands.”

The 2170W offers print speeds of up to 23 pages per minute, and resolutions up to 2,400 by 600 dpi using Brother’s HQ1200 technology. The included paper tray handles 250 sheets, and a manual feed slot enables users to easily print on envelopes, letterhead, and thicker stock. The 2170W can connect to a local network using either 802.11g Wi-Fi networking or 100Base-T Ethernet; the printer also offers USB connectivity for direct connection to a computer. The printer sports 32 MB of built-in memory, PCL6 emulation, features 49 built-in scalable fonts, and supports WIndows, Mac OS X, and Linux.

What does printer spooling mean, and how to fix it on Windows and Mac
Canon Pixma G4270 is a MegaTank all-in-one inkjet printer.

The computing industry is flooded with obscure technical terms like printer spooling. Spooling happens automatically in the background, and you might never notice this feature as long as it keeps working properly. But since you're reading this article, something has probably gone wrong with printing on your machine, and you need to fix this mysterious spooler problem.
What does printer spooling mean?
Printer spooling has been around for decades and is a bit like thread spooling or cable spooling. If you have more than you can easily handle at once, you wind it on a spool and remove only what's needed for the job at hand.

Since most printers can only receive one document at a time, your computer's operating system uses a print spooler to arrange documents in a queue. Printers have a limited amount of memory, so a single long document might require spooling. In that case, it will be split into two or more documents in the printer queue.

Clearing the printer queue on a Windows PC or a Mac is a simple task that can help get rid of old documents that didn’t print for some reason. Those pending documents in the queue cause problems even if you've refilled paper and taken care of other printer issues.

Since more people are working from home, there's a good reason to own more than one printer. Great quality, affordable printers have removed the barrier to picking up a printer dedicated to a home office or one for printing photos.

A side effect of the luxury of multiple printers is frustration when you realize you sent a photo to your black-and-white laser printer. The reverse might be even worse -- printing a shipping label on your color photo printer, wasting ink and expensive paper.
