Dell Offers LoJack for Laptops

Computer maker Dell has announced it is teaming with Absolute Software to offer CompuTrace LoJack for Laptops as a theft recovery service available with the purchase of CompleteCare Accidental Damage Service with selected Dell Inspiron notebook computers with one to our year warranties, or as a standalone product on the Dell Software and Peripherals Site. Price for the service will range from $99 to $139.

“Losing a computer is costly, even potentially devastating, when you consider the value of the data and personal information stored on today’s notebooks,” said Rocky Mountain, VP of Dell’s U.S. Consumer business. “Combining accidental damage protection with theft recovery service is a huge win for consumers who want increased security.”

Once installed, LoJack for Laptops works by contacting Absolute Software’s monitoring center via the Internet. In the event a system is lost or stolen, the owner just contact’s Absolute Software’s recovery team. The next time the computer “checks in” via the Internet, the team starts monitoring it every 15 minutes, and worth with law enforcement to obtain tracking information and other information useful for obtaining search warrants, and, eventually, leading police to recover and return the computer. Absolute Software promises that if your computer isn’t recovered within 30 days, they’ll refund the price of your software—which may be small comfort compared to the cost of replacing a notebook, or the damage from lost data and files. (Back up early and often, people!)
