There’s been a lot of controversy about Fallout 4’s graphics. A lot of that has to do with the fact it uses the Creation Engine, a priority branch of the Gamebyro engine, which Bethesda has 2002’s The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. The developer has honed the draw distance of its engine to a degree few other studios can match, but it has fall behind in certain areas, such as surface mapping and character animations.

But that doesn’t mean Fallout 4 is ugly. It benefits from excellent art direction and a departure from the grim-dark look of Fallout 3, a game famous for using every shade of brown known to man. The effect is particularly stunning at 5K resolution. Have a look for yourself.

Diamond City

The first major settlement you encounter, Diamond City, is a major highlight of Fallout 4‘s early hours. Large, colorful, and nestled in an old stadium, entering the city gives you a bird’s eye view of its limits. A close look can reveal some fairly mediocre textures are required to pack in all this detail, but vivid characters and excellent lightning distracts for the less attractive elements of the settlement.

The Wasteland

These screenshots continue to show Fallout 4’s broader color gamut, but also prove that it’s not all sunshine and lollipops. While sweeping fair weather vistas look downright beautiful, there’s plenty of ruined buildings to see, and some areas of the game take on a sickly, radioactive fog.

Interiors

The interiors are where Fallout 4’s lighting really has a chance to shine (pardon the pun), which may be why the game sometimes experiences performance dips inside buildings, while the exterior areas don’t suffer such problems. Vaults are a particular treat with their retro-future aesthetic.

Characters

While terrain details often aren’t great in Fallout 4, the game does place a priority on characters, with generally sharp textures and realistic face detail. Animations are a jump ahead of Fallout 3 as well, though well behind leaders like The Witcher 3. Most objects enjoy similar attention, especially weapons and armor. They look fantastic.

Greetings, from the Wasteland

Hopefully these images give you all you need to get off the fence and decide whether you love or hate Fallout 4’s new look. Remember, you must click the link at the top of each image to download the full 5K file. The galleries are 720p .jpg files, because 5K images are so very, very large.

You can also view the photos in our Flickr gallery, and download original quality .bmp files if you really want to see every last detail.

Windows PCs now works with the Quest 3, and I tried it out for myself

Microsoft and Meta teamed up on a new feature that lets me use my Windows PC while wearing a Quest 3 or 3S, and it’s super easy to connect and use. I simply glance at my computer and tap a floating button to use Windows in VR on large displays only I can see.

Meta’s new Quest 3 and 3S are among the best VR headsets for standalone gaming and media consumption. When I want more performance or need to run one of the best Windows apps that aren’t yet available in VR, I can connect to a much more powerful Windows PC.

How to transfer your books from Goodreads to StoryGraph
Front page of a book on Onyx BOOX Go 10.3 tablet.

Goodreads has been the only game in town for Android and iOS book-tracking for a long time now, and like most monopolies, it has grown old and fat. Acquired by Amazon in 2013, avid book readers have had lots to complain about in recent years, with the service languishing unloved, with no serious updates and an aging interface. It's been due some serious competition for a long time, and lo and behold, some has arrived. StoryGraph is a book-tracking app that offers everything you'll find on Goodreads but with an algorithm that lets you know about what you might love, and adds features any bibliophile will know are essential — like a Did Not Finish list.

I played Black Myth: Wukong on the new MSI handheld to prove it was possible
Black Myth: Wukong running on the MSI Claw 8 AI+.

I scoffed when MSI put the Claw 8 AI+ in my hands with Black Myth: Wukong selected. I'd spent 80 hours in the game on my full desktop packing an RTX 4090, and I knew just how demanding the game was. It's a pipedream for a handheld gaming PC.

I pressed Continue and loaded up at the Pool of Shattered Jade rest point -- the ideal spot to farm; if you know, you know -- and proceeded to run up to the cocoons spotted around the area, unleash my spirit ability, and run back. Sitting in a dimly-lit New York City bar, I continued the loop a few more times. I'd done plenty of farming in the game before.
