Computer maker Fujitsu has quietly brought its LifeBook N6460 notebookcomputer to the United States, just a few weeks after introducing it in Singapore. Like most 17-inch notebooks, the N6460 sacrifices portability and weight for performance, storage, and features, aiming to be a desktop replacement and high-definition entertainment system.
The N6460 offers an Intel Core 2 Duo processor (at speeds from 1.5 to 2 GHz) paired with a 17-inch XGA+ display driven by an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 graphics controller (with 256 MB of dedicated video memory along with 256 MB of shared memory). The system supports up to 4 GB of RAM (base 2 GB), single and double hard drive configurations offering from 100 to 500 (250 × 2) GB of storage, and either a dual-layer multiformat DVD writer or optional Blu-ray drive—although Fujitsu is a little wishy-washy on the latter, with the systems’ tech specs offering a HD DVD-ROM drive, but the custom configuration options offering Blu-ray. Perhaps it’s their way of opting out of the high-definition format war.
For connectivity, the systems feature gigabit Ethernet, 802.11 a/b/g or a/b/g/n Wi-Fi connectivity, five USB 2.0 ports, one four-pin FireWire port, HDMI and S-Video output, a Type I/II PCMCIA slot, an ExpressCard slot, and an integrated fingerprint reader.
The N6460 is available now, with stock configurations running from $1,499 to $2,599, although numerous customization may alter pricing.
