In a first, the UK Highways Agency is allowing Google Maps access to its data on traffic speeds. That means it will be able to display what’s shown on motorway signs, Kablenet reports, as well as predicted speeds between two points on the motorway.
It will be the same data that appears on the Highway Agency’s own site. The Highways Agency’s National Traffic Control Center will supply the data in the European standard Datex II format.
Denise Plumpton, director of information at the Highways Agency, said:
"I’m delighted that we are the first country in Europe to work with Google and use our information for the benefit of road users across the country. This sort of project is a key part of our information strategy aimed at getting traffic information out to motorists where and when they need it."
