LaCie Rolls Out Bus-Powered USB Speakers

LaCie Rolls Out Bus-Powered USB Speakers

Peripheral and accessories maker LaCie has introduced a USB, bus-powered version of its Neil Poulton-designs external speakers for desktop and notebook PCs. Previously available as a FireWire device, the USB Speakers are designed to be portable, offer decent low-level sound quality, and they work with either Macs or PCs without any additional software.

“The new USB Speakers provide universal flexibility to all USB-enabled computers without the need for additional power cables, electrical sockets, or batteries,” said LaCie accessories product manager Alexis Kobassian, in a statement. “Also taking into account their rich sound and minimalist design, the USB Speakers can provide a new listening experience for those unable to enjoy LaCie’s FireWire Speakers.”

The USB Speakers operate at 1 Watt per channel (the low power design makes them suitable for use on notebooks) and feature 2-inch neodymium drivers with a frequency response between 90Hz and 20kHz. You won’t be rattling the walls with bass, but they’ll get teh job done for typical desk- and table-top situations, and they’re easily portable for travel: the cables wrap around trees in the base of the speakers, and they ship with a carrying case. With a power adapter, they can even be used with many digital media players.

The USB Speakers are available now at a suggested price of $59.99.

Lenovo Legion 7 laptop shot from the back with logo showing and RGB lighting showing on the table.

Lenovo's Legion machines have been a popular gaming laptop option over the past couple of years. That's thanks to the combination of great thermals compared to other options and the fairly affordable price.

This year, the Legion 7 is not getting a full reboot -- just a small update. Notably, the battery is going from 80 watt-hours up to the max of 99.99. Lenovo has also enabled the laptop with a host of quick charging and slim adapter options.

TikTok continues rolling out its Friends tab, replacing Discover
TikTok app on Samsung Galaxy phone.

TikTok has a number of ways for its users to discover new content. And it looks like the wildly popular short-form video sharing app is switching up how it recommends which bite-sized videos you should watch next. And it's doing so with a more personal touch.

On Thursday, TikTok tweeted that it would continue rolling out a new Friends tab which will feature posts from "people you're connected with." And based on the picture shared in the tweet, it looks like the Friends tab will also replace what's currently known as the Discover tab. (In the photo, the Discover tab's icon is no longer visible and appears to have been replaced with the new Friends tab icon.)

Dell launches sleek 14-inch portable monitor powered by USB-C
Woman sits at a desk using the Dell 14inch Portable Monitor.

Dell launched a new portable monitor aimed at mobile road warriors who need a larger screen while traveling. The Dell 14 Portable Monitor is a 14-inch FHD display that connects to your laptop or tablet with just a USB-C cable, allowing you to augment your display so you can stay productive and collaborate when you're away from your desk.

Made for travel, the Portable Monitor weighs less than a pound -and-a-half and is less than a quarter-inch thick. When you connect it to your laptop -- like Dell's XPS 13 or even Apple's MacBook Pro -- the device allows you to either mirror your screen, giving you a display to make an impromptu presentation for a small group, or augment your notebook's screen with an extended desktop view. Essentially, this latter mode is like a multimonitor setup when you're at your desk, giving you the flexibility to stay even more productive by letting you view more open windows at the same time.
