China’s Lenovo is setting it sites on corporate desktops, announcing its new ThinkCentre A62 desktop PC that’s designed to be easy on enterprise power bills with low energy consumption, easy on IT administrators with remote management capabilities, and easy on the pocketbook by being dirt cheap.
"IT departments, especially in the business world, don’t like change," said Lenovo’s executive director for global desktop marketing, in a statement. "The new ThinkCentre A62 was built to provide business customers with longer PC buying cycles. It combines top-notch performance, manageability, and environmental responsibility in a high value machine."
Built around a 15-watt AMD Althon X2 5000M AM2 CPU running at 2.6 GHz, the ThinkCentre A62s will ship with a 160 GB hard drive, 1 GB of RAM, 16x DVD-ROM, gigabit Ethernet, and Windows Vista Home Premium – although, of course, Lenovo also offers custom configurations, like a 2.7 GHz AMD Athlon 1640B AM2 CPU, Vista Business, up to 500 GB of storage, DVD burners, and up to 4 GB of RAM. (Interestingly a DisplayPort connector is also available as an option.) The systems use up to 40 percent less power than their ThinkCentre predecessors.
The systems will optionally be available with Dash 1.1, a tool that lets users remotely manage the systems. The A62s will also include a "comprehensive set of productivity and manageability tools" that lower enterprises’ costs of ownership. The A62s aren’t going to be anyone’s choice for pimping out as a gaming rig, but don’t be surprised to find them, sidling under desks in corporate environments sometime soon.
