LG Smart Monitors Feature Auto-Adjusting Brightness, Proximity Sensors

South Korea’s LG Electronics has announced a new line of “Smart” W53 widescreen LCD monitors that look to make the everyday computer display a little easier to use—and friendlier on the eyes. The new monitors feature a notebook-like auto brightness feature that enables them to automatically adjust their brightness based on ambient light around them; other features include cinema mode that blanks out everything except on-screen video, and a proximity sensor that illuminates controls only when a user’s hand gets near them.

“LG conducted extensive research throughout Europe and Asia, and learned that one major complaint people had about their monitors was eyestrain from the screen being either too bright or too dark,” said president and CEO of LG Electronics Business Solutions Company B.B. Hwang, in a statement. “Because of this, LG’s W53 Smart Monitors are packed with the world’s first full suite of intelligent features that optimize the screen’s brightness to reduce eyestrain. This also significantly reduces power consumption by lowering the intensity of the backlight.”

The idea of Game Hub is to put multiple cloud gaming services into a single library of games for smart TVs and monitors. So far, the game platforms included are GeForce Now, Google Stadia, and Utomik -- but Samsung has confirmed that Game Hub will not appear at launch on the Smart Monitor M8.

Samsung is expanding its smart monitor lineup at CES 2022 with the Smart Monitor M8 (M80B), a sleek new 32-inch 4K display with some impressive wireless capabilities and smart TV functionality.

Initially, Samsung's smart displays were marketed as an easy way to wirelessly connect to a compatible Samsung smartphone -- like the flagship Galaxy S21 series and the rumored forthcoming S22 models -- for a desktop-like DeX user experience. But in the era of remote and hybrid work, these wireless monitors have a different goal: To bring a clutter-free, cable-free setup to desks and home offices.

This new smart charging feature for Mac is genius
The M1-powered MacBook Pro on a coffee table.

Apple's MacBook will get even smarter when MacOS 11.3 launches, at least when it comes to charging. Source code in the current MacOS 11.3 beta 2 shows that Apple is working on smarter charging algorithms that will allow MacBook laptops to reach 100% charge levels if you have a scheduled meeting event on your calendar.

Prior to the recent MacOS 11.3 beta, Apple's smart charging method limits charging to around 80% if the laptop predicts that you'll be connected to power for an extended time in an effort to preserve battery health over the life span of the device. Apple's smart battery feature was actually borrowed from the company's implementation on iPhones. B
