The fabled 16-inch MacBook Pro could launch this October

Apple’s long-rumored 16-inch MacBook is coming in October, according to supply chain sources cited by the Economic Daily News (EDN) via MacRumors.

The EDN report says the 16-inch MacBook Pro will feature a 3,072 x 1,920 resolution made by LG. This is noteworthy because it backs up an earlier report from IHS Markit, which also claimed the display would be a product of LG’s factory.

However, the report from IHS Markit predicted a September launch date for the 16-inch MacBook Pro, while EDN pegs it for an October launch. That may not be as much of a discrepancy as you’d expect – it’s hard for supply chain sources to predict exactly when products will drop, and Apple often hosts events in both September and October.

The 16-inch MacBook Pro is expected to replace Apple’s current 15-inch MacBook Pro, or at least sit alongside it as a new high-end choice. It is rumored to come with an all-new design that has a similar footprint to Apple’s 15-inch laptop but with thinner bezels, thus allowing for a larger screen.

This would also explain why EDN’s report makes no mention of the 15-inch MacBook Pro, yet also expects the 13-inch MacBook Pro and MacBook Air to be refreshed. With the 12-inch MacBook ditched for good and the 16-inch MacBook Pro set to replace the 15-inch variant, these three MacBooks would represent Apple’s complete laptop lineup.

However, given that there would be a mere three months between Apple updating its entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro in July 2019 and unveiling new 13-inch models in October, we find the timing a little odd. Apple refreshed its other 13-inch MacBook Pro laptops in May 2019, which would give around five months until the touted October update. As MacRumors pointed out, Apple has refreshed the same product twice in one year only once before in the Retina era — back in 2013.

The MacBook Air was also updated in July, which saw it gain True Tone functionality for its Retina display. With a relatively minor change like that, a processor bump in October seems plausible. Could we even see it launch with the new 10th-gen Ice Lake processors from Intel?

It’s also worth noting that the ever-reliable Ming-Chi Kuo has predicted that a new MacBook Air will launch later in 2019 and will get scissor-switch keys instead of Apple’s troubled butterfly keyboard. It’s unclear if EDN’s sources also predict an Air sans-butterfly keyboard, but it would mark a dramatic about-face for the tech giant. Time will tell.

Apple October Mac launch: everything we expect to be announced next week
Apple's Craig Federighi introduces window tiling in macOS Sequoia at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in 2024.

It's official. After an entire month of waiting, Apple has revealed that some Mac-related announcements are coming just next week. The exact timing of the announcements, along with what devices will be launched, however, are still yet to be confirmed.

That being said, the leaks and reporting on this launch have been fairly robust, so we have a fairly good idea of what could be in the works. Refreshing Macs with the M4 chip will be the focus of the event, but there may be a few more surprises too.
When will Apple launch its new devices?

Next week might be the biggest Mac launch since 2020
Logos from the Apple Mac announcement tweet.

Finally, we have confirmation of the long-anticipated fall Mac launch. The rollout, however, may be a bit unconventional for Apple.

At first, we expected a product event, then we speculated about videos and press releases -- and now Apple has revealed an entire "week of announcements" starting on Monday morning. It's expected that the announcements will include the latest M4 refreshes for the Mac lineup, including the MacBook Pro, iMac, and a completely refreshed Mac mini. While many of those will merely be M4 updates, this may end up being the biggest single window of Mac releases since the initial M1 launch in 2020 in terms of sheer quantity.

The M4 Mac launch is incoming, but not how you might expect

The past few months have been full of speculation, anticipation, and pretty wild rumors concerning the upcoming M4 Macs -- and now the predicted release date of November 1 is just a week or so away. Despite the lack of an event announcement, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman still believes the launch is "imminent," with an announcement reportedly coming on October 30.

According to him, Apple Stores are running very low on iMac, Mac mini, MacBook Pro, Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, and Magic Trackpad units -- and this usually happens when updates are about to be released.
